Manchester United told to hire 53-year-old boss, Harry Maguire said man-management is 'brilliant'

Erik ten Hag’s position at Manchester United continues to come under pressure after another weekend in which his side failed to win – and there is a real danger United don’t qualify for Europe next season.

Newcastle’s huge win over Tottenham saw the Toon go ahead of ten Hag‘s men into sixth place, which could promise Europa League football next season. Seventh could also mean Europa League in 24-25.

Man United sit in seventh after a 2-2 draw at Bournemouth. But, West Ham could have overtaken them had they not lost to Fulham – former Old Trafford man Andreas Pereira scoring a brace in a 2-0 victory.

Chelsea have two games in hand, six points behind – with one of those games coming tonight against Everton. So, given United’s poor form, it could be that they struggle to hold onto seventh this season.

West Ham and Liverpool’s results in Europe might even mean that fifth place is not a Champions League place, and that further reduces the chance of United qualifying for Europe at the end of the season.

Erik ten Hag’s Man United may struggle to qualify for Europe

Even if United did quality for Europe, it is more than likely ten Hag departs. A decision has reportedly been made, that he will be leaving Old Trafford in the summer. Alan Brazil expects ten Hag to depart.

Speaking on ESPN, Don Hutchison was asked who he could be replaced by in the summer – and the former Premier League footballer suggested England manager Gareth Southgate as his replacement.

“It will not be Erik ten Hag next season,” Hutchison said about ten Hag. “He’s been a manager on trial, no wins in four. He is not convincing the hierarchy, he might convince himself but he’s not staying on.

“It might be someone like Southgate. The job that he does, trying to work with younger players, mould younger players. It’s not a quick fix, you could mention any manager but they’d have their troubles.”

What Harry Maguire said about Southgate’s man-management

Obviously, Maguire has worked with Southgate, 53, for many years along with the likes of Luke Shaw, Mason Mount, Marcus Rashford and other English players at United. The latest of which, Kobbie Mainoo.

Maguire’s form at Old Trafford has been up and down over the last couple of years, but for England – Maguire has remained a key player. He talked up Southgate’s man-management in the last few months.

“Taken us a long way, gets a lot of respect from the players. If you speak to anyone they will speak highly of Gareth and his management tactically. Man-management is brilliant,” Maguire said, as per the MEN.
