Jamie Carragher and Steven Gerrard message Xabi Alonso after Bayer Leverkusen win the Bundesliga

Jamie Carragher has sent a message to Xabi Alonso after he won the Bundesliga with Bayer Leverkusen yesterday.

For a while, it seemed like it was written in the stars that Liverpool were going to appoint Xabi Alonso as the club’s new manager.

Alonso has achieved unprecedented success at Bayer Leverkusen this season. He has taken Bayer Leverkusen from fighting for relegation to winning the Bundesliga title all within the space of 18 months.

In very Jurgen Klopp fashion, Alonso has shattered Leverkusen’s nickname among rival fans as ‘Neverkusen’ and has turned the club from doubters to believers.

It’s obvious just how highly he is appreciated at Leverkusen based on the mass celebrations after the club’s 5-0 win against Werder Bremen last night to secure the Bundesliga title yesterday.

Given the scenes that unfolded, it is no surprise that Alonso has opted to stay at Bayer Leverkusen for now. Even if it feels like a missed opportunity for Liverpool.

Jamie Carragher’s message to Xabi Alonso on social media

It feels like a missed opportunity, especially because of Alonso’s affiliations with Liverpool. The Leverkusen manager was a cult hero at Anfield during his playing career.

Alonso spent five years at Liverpool and played a key role in helping the club lift the Champions League in 2005 in Istanbul.

He was a cultured midfielder who scored some stunning long-range strikes and was known for his composure on the ball and reading of the game.

One former Liverpool player who was teammates with him for all of those five years was Jamie Carragher.

Now, after Alonso’s success yesterday, Carragher took to social media to send his former teammate a message. Carragher posted the following emojis on X under Alonso’s post to congratulate the Spaniard.

Meanwhile, Steven Gerrard also congratulated Alonso on his Instagram story.

Who is the favourite to succeed Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool now?

It won’t be Xabi Alonso, but that doesn’t mean Liverpool can’t find an excitement appointment.

At the moment, the favourite seems to be Ruben Amorim, who according to a current Premier League player, plays very similar football to Alonso.

Amorim delivered a league title to Sporting CP for the first time in 19 years and would also come with a great track record. He’s on course to win another league title this season.
