'Such is the demand': Sunderland fans manage to do one crazy thing following Hummel announcement

Sunderland fans managed to do one brilliant thing after it was confirmed that Hummel were returning to Wearside earlier this week.

Hummel played a huge part in Sunderland’s history, having begun their alliance in 1988 and producing their kits during their historic 1992 FA Cup run four years later.

The sportswear brand became legendary at the club, often releasing exceptional kits that were well-loved across the country.

The Black Cats announced this week that they were reuniting with Hummel in a new five-year deal, which would first see them release two products that have never before been available to supporters – the 1992 FA Cup final walk-out jacket and the 1993-94 yellow third shirt.

Fans went crazy following the news that Hummel would be returning, having spent years eager to get Sunderland to end their association with Nike.

Sunderland fans cause chaos

After the team sported the clean purple, blue, white and black jacket ahead of their clash with West Brom at the weekend, 1,992 of each product went on sale to supporters at 10am this morning.

However, it took only a minute for the website to shut down due to the high demand.

Writing on X, journalist James Copley said: “10:01am and the website is already broken such is the demand…”

Social media was full of fans left frustrated by the struggles of purchasing the limited edition range, and it wasn’t long before the jacket quickly sold out, before the third shirt soon followed.

A promising start to the 2024/25 season already

Sunderland are doing a brilliant job at making profit with these brilliant releases, and bringing Hummel back is probably actually the best way to get fans back on side after such a disastrous campaign.

Next up will be the kit releases, and if they are anything like the images that have been floating around for some time now, then we are in for a real treat.

It has been a long time since supporters have been excited about our new kits – lets not forget the absolute horror show that the players wore when we were relegated from the Championship during the 2017-18 season.

While it has nothing to do with what happens on the pitch, it does feel like it’s kickstarting a new era at the club. That and recent results against West Brom and Leeds United have lifted the spirits after a really poor few months at the Stadium of Light.
