‘Has improved’: Rio Ferdinand says £42m Tottenham Hotspur player is better this season

Rio Ferdinand has praised one Tottenham Hotspur player for getting better from last season and improving this campaign.

Tottenham Hotspur may have suffered a heavy defeat to Newcastle United this past weekend, but that should not take away from the fact that the North London club could still have a very successful season.

Despite Aston Villa’s win against Arsenal on Sunday, Tottenham are still very much in the race for the fourth and potentially final UEFA Champions League spot in the Premier League table.

After all, Ange Postecoglou’s side are only three points behind Villa in fifth and have also played a fewer game.

While Tottenham have been criticised for playing a high defensive line even under pressure and have conceded 49 goals in the Premier League this season, there is no doubt that they have two of the best centre-backs in the division.

Micky van de Ven has been widely praised for his performances this season and is very quick, and Cristian Romero has been solid at the back.

Rio Ferdinand gives his verdict on Tottenham Hotspur defender Cristian Romero

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has been hugely impressed with Romero and has noted how he has become a more composed and calmer player this season.

The £42 million (Sky Sports) Argentina international centre-back has been shown six yellow cards and one red card this season. Romero was cautioned 11 times and sent off twice in 2022-23.

Ferdinand said about Romero on TNT Sports: “I think Romero has improved again on last season. I thought he was a bit rash at times, blood rushes to his head and he does silly things.

“He’s been a lot more composed. You haven’t seen that as much. When he’s on it, and you see him playing with his temperament in the right place, he’s a very good player. I think the partnership, they complement each other well.”

What Lionel Messi once said about Cristian Romero

Lionel Messi plays with Cristian Romero for the Argentina national football team, and the Inter Miami forward is a huge fan of the Tottenham Hotspur defender.

Messi and Romero won the 2022 Qatar World Cup with Argentina, and in September 2023 after facing Ecuador in a CONMEBOL 2026 World Cup qualifier, the former raved about the Spurs star.

TalkSPORT quoted Messi as saying about Romero: “For me, he is the best defender in the world right now. Amazing performance tonight, man of the match.”
