The non gentle reminders you need to hear, according to a therapist

A therapist issued a much needed public service advice for people who need not so gentle reminders about their mental health.

This latest piece of advice came from TikTok’s own Kristen Gingrich (@notyouraveragethrpst), a therapist based in Maine who aims to “live authentically” and “destigmatize mental health” for her 466k followers.

The therapist offered golden advice

Last month, Kristen posted a video that has since garnered over 1 million views and 145k likes. In the clip, which was seemingly part of an ongoing series, Kristen reminded her followers to “take a f*****g break.”

“You don’t need to wait until you’re burned to a crisp to take a break. You don’t need to do all of these exorbitant amount of things to earn that break,” she explained. “If you need a break, take it. We don’t wait until the house if fully burned down before we start using water, right, we do that when the fire starts.”

Kristen argued that the metaphor also applies to mental health issues as you shouldn’t be waiting to be completely broken before taking action.

She continued: “It doesn’t have to be a two week Bahamas vacation, it can just be taking ten minutes in your driveway before going into your house. It can be 20 minutes and have a dance party in your living room. Do something you’d enjoy. You deserve to take a break.”

Take a break!

Many of Kristen’s followers thanked her for the not so gentle reminder while also admitting to rarely taking breaks.

“What I love most about this, I’m sitting in my car, eating taco bell, in my driveway, after I just got off work. it’s a little extra me time I do every now and then,”

“……. I am very crispy (having a hard time fixing it bc life doesn’t stop for me to break),” another person said.

A third added: “I got laid off last Thursday and I’m stressed and feel lazy, but I didnt realize how drained I was from everything that was going on.”
