Wisbech Town suffer Heanor drubbing before cup final

Wisbech Town go into next Tuesday’s Cambridgeshire Invitation Cup final on the back of a drubbing at fellow strugglers Heanor Town.

The Fenmen were beaten 4-0 in their final United Counties Premier North game of a disappointing season on Saturday. The Fenmen finish the season fourth from bottom.

They were 3-0 down at the break and, even after the home side were reduced to ten men from a 53rd-minute sending-off, conceded again in the 81st minute, after which Alfie Wren was sin-binned.

However, the game against Northern Premier League Midland Division strugglers Cambridge City at Ely City in on Tuesday, April 23 gives them an unlikely chance of silverware.

Manager Alex Street said: “I just want to thank the supporters for coming… they’ve put up with a lot this year. We played a bang-average Heanor side that had four goals from four shots and they were all poor goals to concede.

“The worst thing is we could have had five or six goals ourselves but we don’t take our chances. Certain individuals are prepared to die for the cause but others - are they just here for the wage packet

“We always seem to give ourselves a mountain to climb with poor first-half performances. I wanted to go into the cup final with some momentum but we still need to go there and bring back some silverware to patch up a below-average season.

“I will have a new coach in for next season and I need to bring the right players in, depending on whether we are in the Eastern Counties or the United Counties League.

“We have huffed and puffed and we lack organisation and leadership, but at least we have stayed up.”
