Johnny Depp cozies up with co-star at premiere of his first movie in four years

Johnny Depp has been snapped in a friendly embrace with his co-star Maïwenn at the UK premiere of the movie Jeanne Du Barry.

If ever there was an actor in need of no introductions, it’s Johnny Depp. All the same, audiences are often more than happy to glance back at a career that includes numerous collaborations with director Tim Burton (Alice In Wonderland, Edward Scissorhands, etc.) and the role of a lifetime in Captain Jack Sparrow, the central character of the beloved Pirates Of The Caribbean franchise. Following the extensive media coverage of his trial with ex-wife Amber Heard, the Hollywood actor is back with his first movie in four years, Jeanne Du Barry…

Johnny Depp shows love for Jeanne Du Barry co-star Maïwenn at UK premiere

Johnny’s latest movie is a historical period drama, and the UK premiere took place in London on the evening of Monday, April 15th 2024. Its central stars Johnny and French actress Maïwenn (who also directed Jeanne Du Barry) were in attendance.

Both the 60-year-old actor and 47-year-old actress were photographed getting along famously, sharing a friendly embrace on the red carpet.

Their affection for one another is just a taster of the pair’s on-screen chemistry. Maïwenn plays the titular Jeanne, a working-class woman who uses her intelligence and attractive qualities to move up into high society in 1700s France.

Johnny’s King Louis XV character takes a liking to her before they embark upon a steamy relationship that turns the heads of the court, creating a major scandal jeopardizing their love.

Although Johnny’s demeanor was largely sincere on the premiere’s red carpet, it’s clear he has an appreciation and affection for his leading co-star.

Among the famous guests in attendance were music icon Liam Gallagher’s son Gene, as well as Mackenzie Crook, who starred with Johnny in the Pirates of the Caribbean films.

Maïwenn on why she cast Johnny Depp in Jeanne Du Barry

Johnny’s fans have been speculating about the actor’s roles post-trial, and Jeanne Du Barry marks his first project on the silver screen in four years.

When asked in an interview with Screen Daily why she decided to cast Johnny in the French-speaking role, she had a personal answer.

“Why him?” she asked. “Because I wanted to work with him. And better to be loyal to one’s desire than loyal to one’s… Frenchness.”

The flick’s star, co-writer, and director does admit Johnny wasn’t the “obvious” choice to play the King of France, and French actors were considered ahead of him. However, Johnny was one of the “dream actors” for the part, and he accepted the role once it was offered during a meeting the pair had in London.

Jeanne Du Barry opens in theaters on Thursday, May 2nd 2024.
