'I've followed The Bachelor for 4 years but this divorce hit me like a ton of bricks' - Opinion

Gerry Turner and Theresa Nist’s divorce hit Bachelor fans pretty abruptly. We all thought he was The Golden Bachelor who would go on and stay with Theresa Nist forever, but that fairytale ended fast.

After getting married on live TV, Gerry and Theresa remained a couple for just three months. The Bachelor spin-off stars on The Golden Bachelor are officially single, but there’s got to be more to the story.

Gerry and Theresa’s divorce

Gerry and Theresa announced their divorce on Good Morning America on April 12. Turner said: “Theresa and I have had a number of heart-to-heart conversations, and we’ve looked closely at our situation.”

The ultimate issue was their “living situation and so forth,” with Turner adding, “And we’ve kind of come to the conclusion mutually that it’s probably time for us to dissolve our marriage.”

When asked what went wrong in their relationship, the couple noted distance. Nist was based in New Jersey and Turner liked his lake house in Indiana, where he had lived with his late wife.

The Golden Bachelor duo’s love story

Gerry and Theresa found love on The Golden Bachelor. The two kissed the first night they met, after Turner smeared birthday cupcake frosting on his lips. Nist said it was “the best present ever”.

They both found common ground over the loss of their late spouses. While Gerry was married to his wife Toni Turner for 43 years before she died in 2017, Nist was married to husband Billy Nist for 42 years.

During the ABC show’s finale, Turner made his final choice from the original group of 22 contestants, dropping down on one knee to propose to Nist, over fellow finalist Leslie Fhima, and she said yes.

Most abrupt divorce I’ve ever seen

Gerry and Theresa’s divorce was so abrupt because, not only were they a couple from Bachelor nation, but from the new spin-off for older contestants. Following Gerry’s grief of his late former wife’s death, everyone had hope.

Theresa herself admits “you don’t know everything at 70,” while the two reportedly weren’t living together. Ahead of their wedding, Turner told USA TODAY, “I’m 1000% committed to this.”

He added: “I wouldn’t have asked Theresa to marry me if I wasn’t. When you’re older, the clock ticks faster.”

This makes the whole divorce seriously strange, as they seemed infatuated with one another.

As a reality TV expert who has watched The Bachelor for four years, I thought The Golden Bachelor’s first winners would at least be a perfect example of long-lasting love no matter what your age.
