Middlesbrough boss Michael Carrick should take a gamble and sign 'outrageous' EFL whizkid - opinion

Middlesbrough’s play-off hopes are all but over and attention has now turned towards next season, with the summer transfer window fast approaching.

Michael Carrick‘s side have three games of the season remaining and they’ll want to finish strongly to carry the momentum over to August.

It’s a good chance for Carrick to assess what areas need strengthening, too, and perhaps he can test a few of the academy stars.

It’s become pretty evident that Boro will need to invest in a left-back this summer, with Luke Thomas’ loan deal set to expire next month.

Thomas has been underwhelming since arriving from Leicester City in January and it seems unlikely he’ll be signed to a permanent contract.

With that said, Carrick and his chiefs should take a gamble and sign this ‘outrageous’ EFL whizkid to replace The Foxes loanee.

Middlesbrough should sign Peterborough United defender Harrison Burrows

Peterborough United have a rich history of developing young talent and moving them on for sizable transfer fees and it seems Harrison Burrows may be the latest example of that.

Burrows, who only celebrated his 22nd birthday in January, has enjoyed a productive season in League One, as his impressive statistics evince, per Sofascore.

  • 43 appearances
  • 6 goals
  • 13 assists
  • 17 big chances created
  • 5 Team of the Weeks

The all-action left-back is the second top assister in the third tier, only behind Derby County’s Nathaniel Mendez-Laing who has laid on 15.

Burrows can also operate as a left midfielder, which demonstrates his versatility – an incredibly popular trait in the modern game.

The 2002-born captained Peterborough to an EFL Trophy triumph earlier this month, netting a brace in the final against Wycombe Wanderers.

Harrison Burrows could be signed for next to nothing

Peterborough are usually so shrewd in the transfer market and tend to drive a hard bargain for their key players.

Though, with Burrows, they’ve allowed his contract to run down as it expires this summer. Posh do have the option to extend it, though, even then they won’t be able to demand a multi-million-pound fee.

So Middlesbrough may be able to land his signature for next to nothing, as Peterborough don’t hold the cards.

With a Transfermarkt value of £2.5m, perhaps Boro chiefs will be able to do a deal for half of that, which would represent excellent business for the Teesside outfit.
