What F1 teams do well at Monaco GP with McLaren and Ferrari successful in Monte Carlo

Formula 1 has visited Monte Carlo for the Monaco GP since its inaugural season back in 1950, so F1 Oversteer has looked at what teams tend to do well in the Principality.

Grand Prix racing had already hit the famous streets of Monte Carlo long before a Formula 1 car arrived. The Principality had hosted a flurry of races since 1929. But only F1 has staged a race that parades around the iconic harbour and boasting the Monaco GP name since 1950.

The Monaco GP is also a part of motorsport’s triple crown with the Indy 500 and Le Mans 24 Hours. It is firmly the crown jewel in Formula 1’s calendar. It has also witnessed more than a dozen teams taste success on multiple occasions since Alfa Romeo won the first F1 running.

Juan Manuel Fangio won the first Monaco GP as part of the Formula 1 championship driving for Alfa Romeo in 1950. Yet F1 did not return to the Principality until 1955 when Ferrari took to the top step of the podium at the Monaco GP for their first time with Maurice Trintignant.

It has since held a cherished place on the Formula 1 calendar and witnessed dominant spells from a host of teams. So, with that in mind, F1 Oversteer has taken a look at what Formula 1 teams tend to do well at the Monaco GP and which engine provider has had the most wins…

While Alfa Romeo won the first Monaco GP under Formula 1 rules in 1950, no team has won more races in the Principality to date than McLaren. The Woking squad had dominant spells in Monte Carlo during the 1980s, 1990s and 2000s to pull clear of Ferrari’s Monte Carlo joys.

McLaren have sealed 15 wins at the Monaco GP with Alain Prost (4), Ayrton Senna (5), Mika Hakkinen, David Coulthard (2), Kimi Raikkonen, Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton. Senna interrupted McLaren’s decade of dominance between 1984 and 1993 while at Lotus in 1987.

BRM were the first team to dominate the Monaco GP as Graham Hill won three editions on the spin in the 1960s. He also helped Lotus to enjoy dominance at the end of the decade to merit the nickname, Mr Monaco. While Ferrari later had a dominant time during the 1970s.

Formula 1’s turbo-hybrid power unit era from 2014 saw Mercedes shoot up the standings as one of the most successful teams at the Monaco GP, too. The narrow streets of Monte Carlo have also brought Red Bull success through the years with the circuit often suiting their car.

Mercedes’ time in partnership with Ilmor before buying the British engine manufacturer has also seen their power units dominant at the Monaco GP. Yet Ford engines won the Monaco GP 14 times between 1968 to 1994 during the American brand’s partnership with Cosworth.

No engine manufacturer has yet eclipsed what the Ford units achieved in Monte Carlo, with Ferrari a distant third. Honda and Renault engines have also powered a host of Monaco GP winners in F1. Porsche also built the TAG units McLaren won with in 1984, 1985 and 1986.
