GOP lawmaker attacked by ex-colleague for turning 'his back on his own principles'

Rep. Thomas Massie

Rep. Tom Massie (R-KY) revealed on Tuesday that he would join fringe lawmaker Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) in attempting to bring down Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA).

Massie said that he signed on to co-sponsor Greene's motion to vacate the speaker's chair during a caucus meeting Tuesday.

CNN host Jim Acosta told former Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) he couldn't understand any Republican who thought it would work out in their favor if they ousted another speaker.

"There's a part of me that thinks that the members in the House Republican conference can't possibly think it's good for them to have another speaker thrown overboard and that that is going to really impact all of this," Acosta said.

On Tuesday, Raw Story asked Massie exactly that question, but he dodged by saying that his members were all angry.

Kinzinger responded to Acosta, "The problem is with such a tight majority, [Greene] has kind of a ton of power, quite honestly, because she can put a motion to vacate up. And then you have Thomas Massie, who, by the way, used to actually be a serious legislator."

Now, Kenzinger said, "In the last number of years, he has really, I think, actually, turned his back on his own principles."

Massie could be the one person to "hold the entire House hostage," Kinzinger said. "And this is a rare moment in history. The problem is, and I've used this analogy before — imagine every member of the Republican caucus having a hand grenade, right? Everybody is equally powerful. But if somebody is willing to pull the pin on the hand grenade, they become the most powerful person in the room until somebody else says they're willing to do it as well."
