'Outstanding': Carragher says one Crystal Palace star was actually even better than Joachim Andersen on Sunday

Jamie Carragher has suggested that he has now changed his mind on awarding Joachim Andersen the man of the match award in Crystal Palace’s win over Liverpool – as he believes that one of his teammates was even better.

Oliver Glasner’s men picked up the win which surely takes them to the brink of securing survival in the Premier League.

Eberechi Eze scored the only goal as the Eagles put a dent in Liverpool’s Premier League title hopes.

But Palace had to defend heroically to get the three points. Dean Henderson made a stunning save from Darwin Nunez. Meanwhile, Diogo Jota and Mohamed Salah were denied by outstanding blocks from Palace’s backline.

Jamie Carragher initially awarded Joachim Andersen the player of the match award. Remarkably, the 27-year-old made 13 clearances, according to Whoscored.

But speaking to Sky Sports, Carragher admitted that he may have actually made an error opting for the Dane.

“In the game, I picked Joachim Andersen. I thought he was absolutely fantastic. You see his stats there, he was a huge part of why Crystal Palace got that clean sheet and come away with three points,” he said.

“But he wasn’t the only player who stood out. Mr Wharton in midfield who we’ve been very impressed with.

“He did really well. I think one of his first games was on a Monday Night Football. He was outstanding as well. And there were a number of Crystal Palace players who were. But he was a real standout in terms of creating chances, being on the ball, his pass accuracy, created a chance.

“Would you believe I actually picked Joachim Andersen in the game? But I’m going to change my mind, having reviewed the footage, looked at the stats, Adam Wharton is going to be my EA Sports pundit pick for man of the match.”

Another inspired signing from the EFL

Adam Wharton made a real statement with his performance. The 19-year-old only moved to Selhurst Park in the January transfer window. But already, he is showing signs of being another inspired Palace purchase from the EFL.

Wharton showed the composure Palace desperately needed against a relentless Liverpool side. And he made six tackles during the game (Whoscored).

You can definitely understand why Carragher has now changed his mind about awarding Andersen the man of the match.

But Wharton’s performance at Anfield is likely to be talked about for some time – particularly if the bigger clubs start to take a serious look at his displays in the years to come.
