‘Why would you?’: Martin Keown can't understand what 22-year-old Arsenal player did vs Bayern tonight

Martin Keown has criticised one Arsenal player after what he did in tonight’s Champions League clash at Bayern Munich.

It was a quiet first half at the Allianz Arena as both sides cautiously probed for an opening. Arsenal did create a promising moment though and the opportunity fell to Gabriel Martinelli.

Martin Odegaard drilled a ball into the Brazilian from the right-hand side and he opted to hit it first time.

It looked like the perfect opportunity for Martinelli to take the shot with his right foot. But he took it on his weaker side and Manuel Neuer gathered the ball comfortably.

The chance turned out to be a huge moment for Arsenal as they got off to the worst possible start to the second period.

Keown on Gabriel Martinelli’s missed chance

Speaking on TNT Sports at halftime, Keown reflected on what was a missed opportunity for Arsenal.

He said: “He [Martinelli] has picked up a really good position there, just waiting and you think why would you hit that with your left foot?

“You’re a right-footed player and he’s coming on to that, perfect angle, lovely approach play. Surely you’d hit that with your right foot?”

“I think if he gets that back he hits that with his right,” Owen Hargreaves added. “He can see it coming and you always want to hit that with your good foot.

“In the end he just wants to make contact and get it on goal, because sometimes you say pass it in the goal, but he needs to hit that with his right foot. If he hits it with his right I think it’s a goal.”

Martinelli miss proved costly for Arsenal

The Gunners put in a cagey performance in the first half and Bayern came flying out the blocks after the break.

Leon Goretzka rattled the woodwork with a header within the first minute of the second half.

Thomas Tuchel’s men continued to pile the pressure on Arsenal and were rewarded just after the hour mark.

Joshua Kimmich netted with a well-taken header to beat David Raya and Arsenal struggled to get back into the game.

Mikel Arteta opted to make a couple of changes and Martinelli made way for Gabriel Jesus just minutes after Bayern’s opener.

Unfortunately for Arsenal, they failed to threaten Bayern in the final stages of the game and exited the Champions League at the quarter-final stage.
