Report: What people on Croydon Council have said privately about Selhurst Park project

Crystal Palace have now taken a major step forwards with plans to develop Selhurst Park.

It has been a long time since Steve Parish first received planning permission back in 2018.

Crystal Palace were made to submit a new planning application in 2023 due to changes regarding The London Plan, while COVID-19 also delayed the project.

Furthermore, Parish had to negotiate deals to buy houses on Wooderson Close and a piece of land from Sainsbury’s.

Now – however – Section 106 has been signed, meaning work can begin this summer.

Amid this exciting development, the thoughts of those on Croydon Council regarding the project at Crystal Palace have now come to light…

What Croydon Council think about Crystal Palace project

Well, Crystal Palace fans have long been pessimistic about the Selhurst Park redevelopment actually taking place, having previously been misled by Ron Noades in 1996.

Interestingly, some on Croydon Council shared this pessimism – according to The Athletic.

It is said that a few involved with decision making at Croydon Council have privately expressed their scepticism at the project going through, given the amount of time it has taken to get to this point.

We don’t blame them.

Even from our point of view, the Selhurst Park redevelopment has taken a backseat – we will get excited when it’s done, much like when fans say they’ll only care about a transfer rumour once the player is holding up the shirt.

Relegation should not impact plans

After Sunday’s 1-0 win over Liverpool, it feels highly unlikely that we will suffer relegation this season.

There are eight points between us and Luton Town in 18th – while we also have a game in hand over the Hatters.

However – if relegation does still occur – the stadium plans should still go ahead as expected, according to The Athletic.

Funding has already been secured, so the financial impact of dropping into the Championship would not derail Parish’s plans to improve Selhurst Park.
