Liverpool could face an ‘unlikely’ twist in their pursuit of Ruben Amorim

According to one journalist, Liverpool could face an ‘unlikely’ twist in their pursuit of Ruben Amorim as the club’s next manager.

Currently, Ruben Amorim seems to be the favourite to become Liverpool’s next manager this summer to replace Jurgen Klopp

Given the other available candidates at the moment, the 39-year-old seems like he would be a shrewd appointment. Amorim’s track record in his five years in management so far is exceptional.

He won the Portuguese Cup with Braga after just a few months in charge, delivered a league title at Sporting CP for the first time in 19-years, and is on course to repeat that feat this season.

On top of that, he plays with a similar style to Jurgen Klopp and very much embraces giving young players a chance.

Neil Jones on ‘unlikely’ Liverpool Amorim twist

Of course, nothing is set in stone, though. Xabi Alonso seemed destined to join Liverpool a few months ago, but we’ve now seen how things have unfolded with Alonso opting to stay at Bayer Leverkusen.

Amorim’s case is different to Alonso. He’s been at Sporting CP for over four years now, far longer than Alonso’s less than two year stay at Leverkusen.

The 39-year-old Portuguese manager is definitely more prepared to make the next step in his career. But nothing should be written off at this stage.

Speaking to The Empire of the Kop, journalist Neil Jones said there was a possibility that Amorim could opt to stay at Sporting CP. Although he admitted this was ‘unlikely.’

“There has to be a chance that he does decide he’s happy [staying] with Sporting, but it would be unlikely to me,” Jones said.

How many games are left to play for Sporting CP this season?

Amorim’s future won’t be settled until Sporting CP’s fate is sealed for the rest of the season. Currently, his side are seven points clear at the top of the table.

There are just five league games left to play for Sporting CP, with the last game coming on the 19th May.

After that, Amorim is also set to play the Portuguese Cup final against Porto on May 26th.

Until then, it would be unexpected for Amorim to talk about his future. He will be fully focused on delivering another double at Sporting CP.
