German media react after watching Eric Dier’s display up against Kai Havertz last night

German media have now been having their say on former Tottenham Hotspur player Eric Dier’s performance against Arsenal and Kai Havertz last night.

It’s a pretty odd situation that a player deemed surplus to requirements by Ange Postecoglou at Spurs, is now preparing for a Champions League semi-final.

And in truth, judging by last night’s display Eric Dier should now be back in the England reckoning, perhaps being prepared to start alongside John Stones.

Clearly a fresh start has reinvigorated the centre-back, who had just one-year left on his Spurs contract and wasn’t envisioned as a long-term solution.

But tasked to deal with Arsenal’s Kai Havertz last night, Eric Dier was aggressive and composed, chasing the forward into midfield regularly.

Much like the rest of Mikel Arteta’s front line, the German had little joy.

Arsenal did an excellent job of stifling Harry Kane again, but then left themselves exposed to Joshua Kimmich on the right.

There was so much focus on the likes of Leroy Sane, that it almost felt like Arsenal couldn’t cover all bases.

German media thought Eric Dier dealt with Kai Havertz superbly last night

That being said, German media have now shared their thoughts on Dier’s display against Havertz last night.

Spiegel Sports provided a write up of his individual display, hailing a composed performance.

They wrote: “The 30-year-old came in as an addition to the defensive line in the winter and has established himself there.

“Against Arsenal, he sometimes pursued striker Kai Havertz into the centre circle, which tore a gap in Munich’s defence.

“Such a move only works if you then win the ball. Which Dier managed often enough.

“Important saves in our own penalty area, safe in the build-up, that was a very good performance from Dier.”

Goal in Germany provided a shorter review saying: “As always, good coordination with [Matthijs] de Ligt, a little more impetus in the build-up game.”

The general consensus in Germany was that Dier was extremely effective against Havertz, and solidified his position as a starting defender for the club.

It’s an odd situation for Arsenal fans to watch, let alone those of a Tottenham persuasion.

But just as some thought he would, Eric Dier is proving that he’s still got so much left to give.

All that being said, Harry Kane did reveal what Bayern changed at half-time to beat Arsenal last night.
