Luke Ayling has done something which no player in the Football League can match since March

An incredible Luke Ayling statistic has just emerged.

Since Ayling joined Middlesbrough in January, on loan from Leeds United, he has become a fixture of Michael Carrick‘s side and has been one of the standout performers.

The 32-year-old defender hardly featured in the first period of the season at the West Yorkshire outfit and his decision to depart is now paying dividends.

Ayling’s experience and know-how has massively contributed to Boro’s upturn in form, which has seen them avoid defeat in their last nine games.

Further, they’ve taken five wins from that period, which put them back in the playoff race up until recently.

The veteran has just emerged out on top of an incredible statistic across the top four leagues of English football.

It has come to light that since the start of March, no player in the top four divisions has registered more open-play assists than Ayling’s commendable tally of five, as per Opta’s Jonny Cooper.

Clearly, the all-action full-back still has plenty to give and Carrick should strongly consider offering him a permanent contract in the summer, as his loan deal expires next month.

Ayling laid on an assist in Boro’s last outing away at Ipswich Town, sending in a delicious cross for Emmanuel Latte Lath to head home.

If he is to remain on Teeside permanently, it wouldn’t at all be surprising to see those two link up a lot more next season, with the understanding only improving over time.

It’s a no-brainer for Boro chiefs, as they’ll likely be able to land Ayling on a free transfer at the end of his Leeds contract in June.

Michael Carrick hints at signing Luke Ayling permanently

Carrick, speaking earlier this month, made no secret of how impressed he’s been with Ayling since arriving in the winter transfer window.

“He’s done very well and settled really quickly,” The Boro boss said.

“He obviously hadn’t played a lot before he came in. He added a bit of personality and character to the group and that kind of seen it, knows what it takes to have success in this league experience.

“That’s important to have and we wanted to add that ingredient to the group. He’s done very well. Experience is vital when used in the right, positive way.”

Ayling won’t be able to play Monday’s game, as Middlesbrough play host to his parent club Leeds at the Riverside.

But he’ll have two fixtures after that to play himself into a permanent contract.
