'Hopefully...': Rohl drops injury updates on Di'Shon Bernard and Ian Poveda at Sheffield Wednesday

Sheffield Wednesday play their third-to-last game of the season this weekend.

Sheffield Wednesday still have it all to play for in the Championship.

Despite a tremendous turnaround under Danny Rohl, the Owls are just one place above in the table compared to when he took charge.

Rohl alone has overseen 41 points in the league this season.

But a host of teams in the bottom half have kept up with Wednesday, who are still paying for their terrible start to the season under Xisco Munoz.

Wednesday head to Ewood Park this weekend, and they will be backed by 7,000 travelling fans.

Earlier in the season, Sheffield Wednesday beat Blackburn 3-1 at Hillsborough, in a win that arguably kick-started the whole turnaround under Rohl.

Bailey Cadamarteri scored his first professional goal that game and Will Vaulks shone in the midfield.

Sheffield Wednesday don’t have too many injuries so to say, but the injuries they have are to key players.

The Owls have been boosted by the return of Callum Paterson in recent weeks but remain without Di’Shon Bernard and Ian Poveda.

Speaking on the team as a whole in his Thursday press conference, Rohl said with regards to team news:

“Nearly the same squad. Nobody comes back at the moment.”

And on Bernard and Poveda, Rohl added:

“Hopefully he’s [Bernard] back before the end of the season. This is of course Di’Shon and Ian [Poveda]. We will see. Di’Shon, my hope is big. Day-to-day, we try to bring him on the grass, and Ian as well. Could be helpful to have both available.”

Poveda has missed the last two games now, whilst Bernard has missed the last five for Wednesday.

Di’Shon Bernard and Ian Poveda facing contested summers

Bernard has been one of, if not the best signing for Sheffield Wednesday this season.

The 23-year-old has been a commander at the back and his absence in the last few weeks has been sorely missed, in the 2-2 draw against Norwich City especially.

He brings athleticism and composure to the backline and was forming a nice partnership with Michael Ihiekwe as well.

And Poveda has been a class signing too.

But he too is out of contract in the summer and with both players injured and unable to help their team, what the summer now holds for the pair remains to be seen.

Sheffield Wednesday would no doubt love to keep both of them and if they’re not playing right now, it keeps them out of the shop window somewhat.

But on the whole, they’re needed in this final run of games, though it looks likely that only Bernard who possibly returns before the end of the campaign.

Poveda then may well have played his final game for the Owls.

Kick off vs Blackburn is at 12:30pm on Sunday.
