'Increasingly possible': Journalist says Sheffield Wednesday hero may have already played his last game

One Sheffield Wednesday star may well have played his final game for the club.

Sheffield Wednesday are desperately trying to limp above the dotted line, with just three games left to salvage their season.

The Owls were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Stoke City last weekend.

Liam Palmer handed Sheffield Wednesday the lead and what could’ve, arguably should’ve been the win, but Stoke hit the Owls on the break and took a point.

As things stand, Wednesday sit in 23rd place of the Championship table and are two points behind Birmingham City in 21st.

Over the last round of fixtures, all of Birmingham City, Plymouth Argyle, Blackburn Rovers, and Millwall picked up wins.

The Owls return to Championship action with a trip to Blackburn this weekend, then hosting West Brom in their final league game at Hillsborough this season, finishing the campaign with a trip to Sunderland on May 4th.

Ian Poveda Sheffield Wednesday future discussed

Sheffield Wednesday have been without Leeds United loan man Ian Poveda for the last couple of games now.

The 24-year-old made a hasty return to action against Middlesbrough after missing the previous Swansea City game with a muscle injury.

And then starting strongly in the 2-0 win vs QPR, Poveda pulled up, and was brought off after half-an-hour with a muscle injury.

He’s not featured since, and journalist Joe Crann believes the Colombian may have played his final game for Sheffield Wednesday.

What has Danny Rohl said about Ian Poveda injury

Speaking to The Star after the game vs Stoke City, Rohl said of Poveda’s injury:

“Ian has had a muscle injury two times in a short period, maybe we’ll have him again for the end of the season – maybe not. For me I have to use the players I have, and then try and get the points that we need.

“Every injury is not helpful for us, and we know that Ian had an impact. But at QPR our subs did really well, and all in all I cannot say something against my team.”

Danny Rohl now has fresh conundrum

There’s no doubting the quality and energy that Poveda brought to the Sheffield Wednesday XI.

And Rohl may now struggle to find a like-for-like replacement with nobody really boasting the same traits as Poveda.

Josh Windass may be the closest, but he’s still a pretty far cry from Poveda, with Windass showing in recent performances that he still needs to get back to full fitness.

Then the likes of Djeidi Gassama and Anthony Musaba who can be match-winners on their day, but are too often inconsistent; Musaba especially.

Someone needs to step up in Poveda’s absence, especially with Ike Ugbo not firing right now.

Though whether anyone will remains to be seen.
