Meghan Markle's awkward video wasn't her 'fault' - 'She and Harry are damned either way'

Meghan Markle’s awkward video at a charity polo match alongside Harry has been criticized online. However, a royal expert says the couple is always under scrutiny and defends the Duchess.

The 42-year-old supported her husband Prince Harry last week, with fans gushing over their adorable interaction. The Duke had played a polo match as part of his charity Sentebale, and Meghan Markle took on the part of doting wife. After walking on stage afterward, to hand the Duke his trophy alongside his teammates, Meghan’s awkward interaction with a woman after asking her to move went viral. But a royal expert has now jumped to defend her.

Speaking on TalkTV’s Heirs and Spares, Rupert Bell broke down what happens behind the scenes for big events like these.

Commentator Kinsey Schofield asks: “She’s been criticized for this, even I made the comment that it felt like you were ‘seeing some of her controlling nature on display’. She’s often said that she wears the pants in the family, and I thought that visually says that right there.

“You had great feedback what typically takes place in that moment and how that translated on video, was that a misinterpretation?”

Rupert replies: “I think the optics, when it comes to Meghan and Harry, you’re either in the Meghan and Harry camp that you like them and everything they do is golden. Then there is a very strong camp the other way, that won’t have anything to do with them.

“At times you get the feeling, ‘they’re damned if they do, damned if they don’t’.

He explains at events, royals are given a heads-up by their team ahead. They’re “briefed” on what to expect, how to hand off trophies and who they will be seeing on stage.

Meghan Markle’s awkward clip from polo is ‘nothing special’

Rupert explains: “They will know what’s going on, so when they see a last-minute change, like Meghan coming up presenting the trophy – that’s not unusual. Princess Diana use to do it, Catherine’s done it, but you have people question ‘why is she hogging the limelight?’.

“It’s perfectly normal, and she will get eyeballs because the photograph is going to be seen.

“They needed to make sure they find no reason for there to be an excuse to criticize Meghan for saying ‘that woman should have gone straight to the middle rather the other side of Harry'”

“It wasn’t planned, actually, it’s probably the PR in the wings didn’t” explain what will happen in front of the cameras, he adds.

Rupert continues people have come to the conclusion, “‘it looks like Meghan’s trying to control the situation’, [but] that’s what they need to make sure doesn’t happen again.”
