Report: Newcastle can now sign 'world class' player for £51m this summer

Newcastle United may have the chance to make Bruno Guimaraes’ international teammate one of their most expensive signings ever this summer.

The record currently belongs to Alexander Isak, who is Newcastle United’s record signing. He cost £63million in 2022, in a deal that is yet to be eclipsed.

The Magpies’ second most expensive signing came 12 months later, with Sandro Tonali arriving at St James’ Park for £55million. That move has not gone quite to plan, with the midfielder currently in the midst of 10-month ban after being investigated for betting.

Now Newcastle United are preparing for the 2024 summer transfer window, and pondering who to make their marquee signing.

Newcastle need to sign a centre-back this summer

It could potentially be a centre-back, with Newcastle desperately needing reinforcements in that position.

The Magpies were already planning to sign a central defender, and now their need has only intensified after what happened to Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles. They have both suffered ACL injuries, and could be out of action for the rest of 2024.

That is why Eddie Howe badly needs to sign a centre-back this summer, and he could get one if he takes PIF’s chequebook to Italy.

Newcastle linked with signing Juventus defender

It was reported last month by HITC Football that Newcastle United are one of multiple Premier League clubs who have been offered the chance to sign Gleison Bremer from Juventus this summer.

The Brazilian centre-back has been linked with the Magpies in the past, and was a target heading into the summer of 2022.

Bremer joined Juventus that summer instead, but looks on track for a move away two years later.

The Italian media have stated that Newcastle are interested, with Calciomercato reporting that the Magpies are keen.

They state that Manchester United and Atletico Madrid are also interested, with Eddie Howe’s side and the La Liga giants lagging behind the Red Devils in the race to sign the Brazil international. Bremer has got four caps for his country, and appeared alongside Bruno Guimaraes in their 1-0 win over England last month.

How much Gleison Bremer will cost Newcastle amid Juventus exit rumours

Calciomercato report that Bremer, who has previously been called ‘world class‘, has a release clause in his contract that will allow him to leave Juventus for between £51million and £60million. However, it is only active in 2025.

Despite this, Calciomercato state that Bremer and Juventus have an agreement that states he can leave the Italian club this summer, if someone agrees to pay that amount.

So Newcastle know that they are going to have to pay more than £50million if they want to sign Bremer, after missing out on him two years ago.

That feels unlikely, with Toon officials seemingly more focussed on cheaper deals. Lloyd Kelly and Tosin Adarabioyo are being heavily linked with moves to St James’ Park, with both players set to become free agents this summer.

And with Newcastle very wary of PSR, deals like that feel more likely than splashing out on a player who Juventus are seemingly trying to get rid of.
