Driver killed, another hurt in 6-vehicle crash on Garden State Parkway, cops say

A 41-year-old driver was killed early Wednesday on the Garden State Parkway when his SUV was rear-ended while stopped in traffic, triggering a chain reaction crash involving six vehicles, officials said.

The driver who caused the crash was traveling north near milepost 145.1 in Irvington at 12:45 a.m. when the person’s car slammed into the back of an SUV driven by Tarron Francis,41, of Brattleboro, North Carolina, State Police said. Francis was pronounced dead at the scene.

His SUV was then pushed into three other SUVs and a car all at a standstill along the Parkway, authorities said.

The driver of the car who rear-ended Francis was hospitalized with moderate injuries.

The crash took place a little less than a mile south of Exit 144, the South Orange Avenue exit.

State Police said the crash remains under investigation.
