'I can say': Fabrizio Romano suggests 'influential' manager will definitely not join Liverpool

Liverpool’s search for a new manager remains ongoing, but Fabrizio Romano has ruled out the possibility of one boss replacing Jurgen Klopp at Anfield.

The Reds crashed out of the Europa League yesterday despite winning the second leg 1-0. The damage was done at Anfield last week, when they were battered 3-0 by Atalanta.

Klopp only has the Premier League to fight for now, and we’re sure his side will give it their all to pip Manchester City and Arsenal to the title.

However, they are third in the table, and it’s no longer in their hands.

Irrespective of what happens, Liverpool will need a new boss this summer, and Romano has shared what he knows about one terrific manager.

Fabrizio Romano delivers verdict on Gian Piero Gaperini to Liverpool

Liverpool have been linked with a number of managers over the last few months.

The Reds job is a really attractive one, and most managers would love the opportunity to replace Jurgen Klopp at Anfield this summer.

Ruben Amorim seems like the favourite for the job at the moment, but another name has been tipped over the last week.

That’s Gian Piero Gasperini, who has done a tremendous job as the manager of Atalanta since he took over the club back in 2016.

After Atalanta picked up a fantastic 3-0 against Liverpool at Anfield, some people suggested that Gasperini should be considered to replace Klopp this summer.

That suggestion went viral on social media, and Gasperini himself claimed he’s ‘happy’ to be linked with a move to Liverpool.

Fabrizio Romano has now had his say on the possibility of this happening this summer.

The journalist claimed that the links were generated only from the game at Anfield last week, and there’s absolutely nothing between the two parties. He made it clear that Gasperini will not become the next Reds boss.

He said in his Daily Briefing yesterday: “Gian Piero Gasperini will have raised some eyebrows when he addressed rumours about him being in contention for the Liverpool job.

“He spoke at his press conference ahead of the second leg of their Europa League quarter-final with the Reds, saying: “Of course I am happy with links to Liverpool job to replace Klopp but my focus is on the game.”

“For sure, Gasperini has done a fantastic job at Atalanta in recent times so I’m not too surprised that, after beating Liverpool in such a convincing way with that 3-0 win at Anfield last week, there is some media speculation about him possibly replacing Klopp, but there’s nothing more to it than that.

“I can say that there’s nothing at all between Gasperini and Liverpool from what I know. I think these are links just generated by Atalanta’s super game vs Liverpool at Anfield, that’s it. As for other clubs, again there will always be links, but for now I see him staying at Atalanta.”

What Italian football expert said about Gasperini and Liverpool

Fabrizio Romano is right, the Gian Piero Gasperini to Liverpool links only emerged after Atalanta’s fantastic win against the Reds last week.

The 66-year-old, however, is a brilliant manager. He has done a great job at Atalanta over the last eight years despite not having the kind of resources that Juventus, Napoli and the two Milan clubs do.

Gasperini’s Atalanta are now through to the semi-finals of the Europa League as well, and after what they did at Anfield, you can’t really rule out the possibility of them winning it.

If that happens, Gasperini’s stock will go through the roof, but Italian football expert James Horncastle believes the Atalanta boss should already be regarded very highly.

He went as far as calling Gasperini ‘the most influential Italian coach in the last 15 years’ and urged Liverpool to consider him.

Horncastle said on TNT Sports last week: “There is a big vacancy here [at Liverpool] in the summer and Gasperini doesn’t get talked about. In over eight years he has punched above his weight in terms of resources.

“I think he should be in the conversation for all of these jobs; Gasperini was burnt in the past when he went to a big job, he went to Inter, who didn’t back him.

“At Atalanta, he knows he’s onto a good thing; he’s in his sixties, he knows the grass isn’t greener on the other side. He’s got a very good contract; he’s incentivised to stay here.

“But at the same time, we’ve spent the last six weeks talking about [Xabi] Alonso coming here, [Ruben] Amorim coming here – this guy beat Amorim home and away, and went four games against him unbeaten. He’s shown he can build and rebuild teams.”
