Arsenal and Liverpool make enquiries to sign 'world class' defender, told he will cost £51m - journalist

The Bundesliga continues to throw up plenty of talent for Premier League clubs to sign and the latest name on the radar is a South American star that has impressed in his first season in German football.

Central defence is likely to be a position that both sides look to recruit in this summer. Joel Matip will be leaving Anfield and whoever replaces Jurgen Klopp will need cover in the middle of the Anfield defence.

Over at Arsenal, duo Gabriel and William Saliba have been incredible for the majority of the campaign. But, behind them, there are little options and those that are at Arsenal – present a real drop in quality.

This season, one of the Bundesliga’s best defender has been Frankfurt’s Colombian star Willian Pacho. Joining the club last summer from Royal Antwerp, the defender was still somewhat of an unknown.

Arsenal and Liverpool make moves to sign £51m South American

But he has starred for Frankfurt, alongside on-loan Leeds United defender Robin Koch. On the side of a back three, Pacho has shown his incredible speed, athleticism and ability on the ball as a defender.

That has attracted plenty of attention from the bigger Premier League clubs ahead of the summer. There has been prior links to Tottenham, while reports have also said Arsenal’s interest has been long-standing.

But Sky Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg has delivered an update. He has taken to Twitter to inform fans that both Arsenal and Liverpool have made enquiries to sign Pacho – with a fee of £51m required.

What the Frankfurt manager has said about Willian Pacho

Quoted by theBundesliga site, Frankfurt boss Dino Toppmoller has said that Pacho is a wonderkid: “He’s doing a great job, and is getting better all the time. He’s really reliable and has world-class potential.”

So, which club is his best move? It is difficult to see anyone overtaking Cristian Romero and Micky van de Ven at Tottenham, with Spurs also signing Radu Dragusin in January. They are well-stocked in defence.

Arsenal or Liverpool? Well, like Spurs, Gabriel and Sliba are not going to be overtaken any time soon. Two brilliant centre-backs and their bond together is even stronger. Liverpool is Pacho’s best bet this summer.
