‘We were talking’: Mauricio Pochettino shares how Chelsea players have reacted to penalty drama on Monday

Mauricio Pochettino has now shared how Chelsea players have reacted to what happened on Monday at Stamford Bridge.

He said in his pre-match press conference that there have been conversations during training regarding how the players have dealt with the penalty debacle against Everton.

However, the brilliance of Cole Palmer in particular threatened to be overshadowed in the second half by a debate over a penalty given when the score was already 4-0.

Both Nicolas Jackson and Noni Madueke made their case to take the penalty, and made their discontent very clear when the 21-year-old pulled rank and found the net.

Pochettino launched a scathing attack on the situation, threatening that he would not be accepting if it occurred again.

He stated today though that they reacted well on the training ground to the scenario, and he has faith it won’t occur again.

He said: “We were talking a lot after Monday. We have been practicing penalties and talking [laughs]. We made it clear after the game, we had a meeting between the players and staff and the sporting directors, Paul and Laurence, were there.

“Now we need to move on. It’s about to be clever. They are clever and understood the situation. In one point, it was not an image we like but in another point, it’s good that the players want to take responsibility. But they need to respect the rules. Discipline is so important.”

It does look as if Palmer has now been acknowledged as the regular penalty taker at last, with there being a resistance to do so so far.

Now, it remains to be seen if he keeps his nerve again if the situation arises where he needs to step up again against his former side.
