Unai Emery guided Aston Villa to their first European semi-final since 1982 on Thursday night. The Birmingham outfit overcame French side Lille in a penalty shootout full of drama.

Goalkeeper Emi Martinez appeared to be sent off for a double yellow before he was saved by a bizarre rule which kept him on the pitch to palm away the match-defining spot-kick.

All eyes are now on the Europa Conference League semi-finals with Emery’s side set to face Greek giants Olympiacos. Their opponents knocked out Turkish team Fenerbahce, also on penalties, to reach this stage.

When do the Europa Conference League semi-finals take place?

Aston Villa will once again host the first leg of the tie. This will take place on May 2, with Villa Park hosting.

The return fixture will happen the following week. Olympiacos’ ground, George Karaiskakis Stadium will welcome the Villians on May 9.

Upon the conclusion of the Lille fixture, Aston Villa released a statement saying: “Further details for our semi-final tie against Olympiacos, including full ticketing information, will be confirmed in due course.”

Who did Olympiacos beat to get to the semi-finals?

Originally, Olympiacos started the season in the Europa League before falling out of the competition. The Greek side came third in the group stages which contained the likes of West Ham, Freiburg and Backa Topola.

As a result, they fell into the Conference League. From here they defeat Ferencvaros and Maccabi Tel Aviv before beating Fenerbahce last round.
