Cash is icing on the cake for Pink Ladies Diss fundraiser

A breast cancer survivor has raised more money for a charity pushing to find a cure for the disease.

Heather Babb held a fundraiser in Diss Market Place on April 13 in aid of the Pink Ladies Tractor Run, which is set to celebrate its 20th year in 2024, having raised more than £1 million for Cancer Research UK since its inception.

The 76-year-old fundraiser, of Croft Lane, said helping to fund research into breast cancer was something she is very passionate about.

“I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2021, three days before Christmas,” she said. “Then, in January 2022, I had a breast removed.

“After that, I decided I wanted to do something to raise money to help with research, so after talking to Annie Chapman (who is in charge of the run) and finding a tractor, I have been a part of it ever since.”

This cake sale marked the third one that Mrs Babb has organised, raising £400. She also hosted a fashion show last year, which made around £3,000.

“Diss Town Council has been so supportive over the years with my ideas to help the Pink Ladies,” she said. “This stall has been brilliant and I am just really chuffed with how much we raised.”

Mrs Babb said it will be emotional when she gets back on the tractor for this year’s event.

She added: “When we drive through Harleston, there are usually hundreds of people lining the streets, all clapping and cheering us.

“I doubt there are many tractor drivers that get to the end of that street who are not crying. The run brings everyone together in solidarity – men as well as women, as anyone can get breast cancer.

“Without these people supporting us, we would not be able to help fund research, so we thank everyone from the bottom of our hearts.”

Mrs Babb’s next fundraiser will be a car boot sale at Diss Park on June 2, when pitches will cost £5.
