Arsenal now interested in signing Real Madrid star who impressed vs Manchester City

Arsenal are reportedly interested in signing a Real Madrid star who recently impressed in the UEFA Champions League against Manchester City.

The Gunners are preparing for a massive summer of spending with Mikel Arteta set to yet again oversee some wholesale changes in the Arsenal squad, with the likes of Eddie Nketiah, Reiss Nelson and Thomas Partey all linked with moves away from the Emirates Stadium.

With a world-class centre-forward on the top of the transfer agenda as well as a midfielder, Arsenal fans will be hopeful that Arteta and sporting director Edu Gaspar can once again hit their transfer business out of the park after the success of last year.

And one name from Madrid is now being linked with a move to Arsenal.

Real Madrid star Ferland Mendy reportedly wanted by Arsenal

According to L’Equipe, Arsenal are one of a handful of top European clubs interested in signing Madrid defender Ferland Mendy, who this week was one of the star performers against City in the Champions League.

A France international and a regular for Madrid, Mendy’s contract with the Spanish giants is due to expire in 2025 with little activity over Los Blancos renewing the left-back’s deal, leading to the possibility of the fullback leaving the La Liga side.

And Arsenal could be a potential destination for Mendy, with the Gunners potentially in the market for a new left-back after the problems Arteta has had with the position this season with Jurrien Timber spending the entire year out injured.

Indeed, Mendy could be an upgrade on the likes of Oleksandr Zinchenko, but given how many players Arsenal have in the position, the former Olympique Lyonnais star might be someone the Gunners don’t need to focus on for now.

Arsenal have bigger issues in the squad than signing a new left-back

With Timber seemingly signed to become Arsenal’s new left-back before picking up an ACL injury on the first day of the season, there’s a real chance that the Dutch international could claim this place for his own in the new campaign.

As a result, signing a left-back should be quite low down on Arsenal’s summer to-do list, with the likes of Jakub Kiwior and Takehiro Tomiyasi two more players who can play the position for the Gunners if needed.

With a striker and midfielder more important, Arsenal need to ensure they get their priorities straight this summer, and a left-back such as Mendy might be welcome later in the window when all the key business is done.
