Barcelona join Tottenham in £52m transfer race as Fabrizio Romano claims ‘initial meetings’

Tottenham Hotspur will surely have attacking signings in mind for this summer as Ange Postecoglou weighs up Timo Werner’s future in North London.

Tottenham have had a weekend off as the clash with Manchester City was postponed due to Pep Guardiola’s FA Cup commitments.

With Tottenham already out of the competition – ironically, at the hands of City – Ange Postecoglou and co have had the weekend off.

We can’t imagine that Postecoglou is on the beach sunning himself, but rather still thinking about last weekend’s 4-0 thrashing at Newcastle United.

Tottenham were second best throughout and that result has seriously dented the top four hopes – especially with Aston Villa winning two games since then.

Postecoglou and co will hopefully be raring to go for the North London derby against Arsenal next weekend, with that fixture now looking crucial.

Tottenham’s summer spending is likely to be impacted by the Champions League qualification fate and Spurs may be in negotiations with RB Leipzig over multiple moves this summer.

Fabrizio Romano on Tottenham target Dani Olmo

Tottenham took Timo Werner on loan from RB Leipzig in January and will have to make a decision on a £15million permanent move.

The German has blown hot and cold so far and Tottenham may need to be rather selective about where money is spent this summer.

Werner’s RB Leipzig teammate Dani Olmo has also been linked with a move to Tottenham though.

Reports in March suggested that Tottenham had joined the race to sign RB Leipzig playmaker Dani Olmo.

The Spaniard is thought to have a £52million release clause in his contract this summer and Spurs could activate that deal.

Fabrizio Romano has now told Give Me Sport that Olmo is the subject of ‘initial meetings’ around Europe.

Olmo’s team are seemingly gauging interest around the continent but there is nothing advanced just yet.

Romano added that RB Leipzig are unlikely to negotiate on a deal; it’s either the release clause or nothing, just as it was with Dominik Szoboszlai to Liverpool last summer.

“Yes, there’s a chance, but at the moment, I’m told that he’s still in initial meetings with his agents around Europe,” said Romano. “He’s also not in advanced negotiations or talks because he has a release clause in his contract worth around €60m (£51m), so the price is already there. We know that Leipzig don’t like to negotiate usually.”

“You have to pay the clause or nothing, like what happened, for example, with Dominik Szoboszlai at Liverpool last summer. So, I think they’re already all well-informed about the situation of Olmo, but at the moment, I’m not aware of anything advanced in terms of contacts,” he added.

Olmo to Barcelona latest

Olmo has bagged eight goals and five assists in 23 games this season but missed two periods of the campaign through injury.

The 25-year-old is a versatile performer; he can play as a number 10 or off either flank, presenting real versatility to Postecoglou if Spurs strike a deal.

Tottenham are far from alone in this race though and Barcelona could make a move.

SPORT claim that Barca’s sporting director Deco has met with Olmo’s father and representatives to discuss a move to the Camp Nou.

Olmo hails from Catalunya and spent seven years in the Barca ranks before being sent to Dinamo Zagreb in a swap for Alen Halilovic.

Some may remember Halilovic as being the next big thing but Olmo’s career has vastly surpassed that of the Croatian.

Barcelona now want Olmo back and it’s stated that he believes it is the right time to return to the La Liga giants.

That leaves Tottenham in a real battle for Olmo but after convincing Radu Dragusin to snub Bayern for a move to North London, Spurs should not be ruled out.
