N.J. earthquake aftershocks now number 120

The 4.8 earthquake on April 5 was centered around Hunterdon County.

The number of aftershocks recorded following the April 5 earthquake in New Jersey has risen to 120, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Twenty-seven were recorded over the past three days: eight Friday, 10 Saturday and nine Sunday, according to the USGS.

The aftershocks follow a 4.8-magnitude earthquake in Hunterdon County on April 5. It was the strongest earthquake centered in New Jersey since 1938.

Most of the aftershocks are too small for people to notice. The largest aftershock this weekend measured 2.1 near Gladstone on Saturday.

Scientists continue to study the effects of the quake. They’re trying to pinpoint its origin.

To help pinpoint the source, strength and duration of the aftershocks, the USGS recently installed five new seismometers within a mile or two of Readington Township, the epicenter of the April 5 trembler.

The USGS’s current forecast estimates a 1% chance of a magnitude 4 or larger aftershock and a 9% chance of a magnitude 3 or higher aftershock in the next month.
