Cambridge nurse Siobhan Taylor called up by Great Britain for IPF World Championships in USA

An intensive care nurse at Addenbrooke’s Hospital is aiming to become powerlifting world champion after being selected to represent Great Britain at the 2024 IPF World Championships in Austin, Texas.

Siobhan Taylor started powerlifting six years ago when a back injury meant she feared she would have to give up her job as a nurse at the Cambridge-based hospital.

However, a physiotherapist recommended that she learn how to lift weights and strengthen her core – and what started as a hobby has now taken her all over the world.

The 45-year-old has enjoyed plenty of success at national and international level, but there remains one omission from her CV.

She said: “I’m thrilled to represent Great Britain and to make my debut at the World Championships.

“I currently hold the titles of Commonwealth champion and All England champion for powerlifting, and British champion and European champion on the equipped bench, so the only title missing is world champion.”

Taylor, who has worked at Addenbrooke’s since the age of 18, will head out to the USA ahead of the championships getting under way on 21 May.
