Ex-Tottenham player’s title push goes horribly wrong after leaving Spurs in January

Tottenham Hotspur saw Harry Kane leave the club in search of trophies last summer, but that pursuit hasn’t exactly gone according to plan.

Kane had come up short in his quest for silverware at Tottenham and decided to move on to Bayern Munich.

Bayern had won every Bundesliga title for more than a decade, so surely Kane would have a league title to his name.

Well, not quite.

Bayern have endured their worst season in a long time and have lost the Bundesliga title to first-time winners Bayer Leverkusen.

Add in a DFB-Pokal exit at the hands of third-tier Saarbrucken and Kane’s quest for trophies has gone somewhat off the rails.

Kane could still win the Champions League but whilst his personal form has been outstanding this season, his teammates haven’t quite followed suit.

Kane wasn’t actually the only Tottenham player to make a move in pursuit of a league title – and it isn’t going too well for them either…

Ivan Perisic’s title hunt collapses

Tottenham struck a deal for Hajduk Split wonderkid Luka Vuskovic back in September, agreeing to sign him in 2025.

That sparked rumours that Ivan Perisic would be heading the other way in an emotional return to his hometown, boyhood club.

A major knee injury in September threatened to derail the move but Perisic did complete a January move back to Hajduk.

The plan was for Perisic to try and get himself fit again and help Hajduk win a first league title since 2005.

That was a real motivator for Perisic and Hajduk were in a strong position coming into 2024, losing just four of their first 19 games.

The winter break hasn’t been kind though and Hajduk have now lost five of their last 12 games and have been dumped out of the cup by rivals Dinamo Zagreb.

Perisic was able to make his debut in that cup defeat but Hajduk’s terrible form meant his first three appearances for his boyhood club were all defeats.

Saturday’s 1-0 win over Slaven Belupo at least gave Perisic a victory, but Hajduk are now 13 points off league leaders Rijeka and their title hopes are all but over.

This has been a miserable 2024 for Hajduk, who sacked manager Mislav Karoglan earlier in April and are now seeing their season fizzle out when it looked so promising.

Will Perisic return to Tottenham?

To put it bluntly, no.

The 35-year-old agreed a loan deal with Hajduk, allowing him to spend the final few months of his Tottenham contract back in Croatia.

Hajduk have also already agreed for Perisic to sign a one-year contract once his Tottenham deal ends, so he has kicked his last ball in a Spurs shirt.

It’s a shame that Perisic made such an emotional move in an attempt to get his boyhood club over the line, only to see it go horribly wrong.

Maybe it’s fate that Hajduk will get over the line next year, ending a 20-year wait for a league title whilst having a fully fit and firing Perisic in the side.

Tottenham fans would surely love to see Perisic end his career with success at Hajduk and will be hoping for better for him next season.
