Can you give a giraffe a tall tale? Cambridge Standing Tall trail organisers launch writing competition

The team behind the Cambridge Standing Tall sculpture trail have launched a competition, Tall Tales, in which children and adults are tasked with creating a story for the giraffes currently taking up home on the streets of Cambridge.

To enter, write a story or poem giving the background behind a sculpture of your choice from the trail, with a maximum limit of 2,000 characters.

Will it come alive at night for city adventures? Does it help a professor find a new discovery? Perhaps it's best friends with another of the giraffes and they are making a difference together?

Whatever your Tall Tale, enter it on the form at https://tinyurl.com/45kz5pyt by midnight on 3 May and you could win an exclusive Tiny G and official trail T-shirt from Break, the charity that helps care leavers.

Some 31 giraffes and a herd of ‘mini G’s’ can be seen around the city until 2 June.

I’m Poppy the Giraffe, enjoying my stay in Cambridge city,

Head and shoulders above the rest, my friends and I are pretty.

We’re tall, we are majestic, we have elegance and grace,

We have herds of baby Gs to watch, all around the place.

My best friends are Giraffodil and Growth, who play with me,

We’re covered in blossoms and blooms, pretty for all to see.

When people are not watching, we love to have a run,

The Botanic Gardens are beautiful in the setting sun.

When the punts are moored and everyone has gone home,

We stop at the Backs to get a drink and enjoy a roam.

Sometimes we love to shop, scarves we really adore,

We have Lion Yard, the Grand Arcade and Grafton shops galore.

Crowds flock to Kings College Chapel, to hear the choir sing,

Our universities educate so many, including Charles The King.

We tower over crowds commuting and many point at us,

Some try to get as high as us, on a double decker bus.

Our friends Honey and Kickers are at Cambridge North to greet,

At Parkers’ Piece stands Strawberries and Cream, looking good enough to eat.

Savannah’s Golden Guardian shimmers in the light,

Swifts depicts the skyline and flocks of birds in flight.

Kind Hearted, Glisten Up and Born to Stand Out watch trains come and go,

Umnyama is at the library, teaching all you need to know.

Gina Giraffacts teaches trail goers facts on us in a fun way,

We all raise funds for Break charity together on auction day.

By Laura:

A shining, glimmering vision of gold.

Capturing the light and sparking a notion.

The tiny spark starts to ripple and grow.

A majestic creature begins to form.

Capturing the light and sparking a notion.

Precious, admired, elegant.

A majestic creature begins to form.

Slowly and gracefully, it takes shape.

Precious, admired, elegant.

Gilded and glowing from head to toe.

Slowly and gracefully, it takes shape.

I gape as a mighty giraffe now stands before me; the artist rests.
