'He is on his way': Louis Saha thinks Newcastle United may have a chance to sign £42.5m player soon

Former Newcastle United striker Louis Saha believes that one of the Magpies’ summer transfer targets could be on the move very soon.

While Eddie Howe and his players are still continuing their quest to qualify for Europe, plans are being put in place behind the scenes for the summer transfer window.

The current ambition is to retain the services of top stars Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak. The former has recently bought a new house in the area which hints towards him staying, while Howe wants to build his team around the latter.

It looks like this summer will be about enhancing the Newcastle United squad, rather than rebuilding it, and it is clear that Howe could do with some extra quality in attack.

Newcastle looking to sign attacking reinforcements

While defensive reinforcements are probably the priority, Newcastle will also look at the opposite end of the pitch.

The Magpies need a fresh option in attack who can play out wide, while they also have a long-standing interest in signing a midfielder who can play in a more advanced role. James Maddison and Dominik Szoboszlai were heavily linked last summer, but the club opted against deals in favour of bringing in Sandro Tonali.

Newcastle interested in Nottingham Forest star

Perhaps this summer could be the time for Eddie Howe to sign the attacking midfielder he craves.

And one player linked who can operate in that role is Nottingham Forest’s Morgan Gibbs-White. He was a target in January, and is expected to be on the club’s radar once again this summer, according to the Athletic.

Newcastle could be in luck too, with Forest potentially needing to cash in given their situation regarding profit and sustainability rules.

What Louis Saha has said about Morgan Gibbs-White

And now Louis Saha has spoke about Gibbs-White’s future, having been on punditry duty for Sky Sports‘ coverage of Forest’s 2-0 loss to Everton.

Saha, who made 12 appearances for the Magpies on loan in 1999, spoke glowingly about the £42.5million man before the game, and suggested that a move away from the City Ground could be on the cards very soon.

“He is a very impressive player,” he said.

“I think he has shown talent but as well very aggressive, capable of getting the ball very high on the field for his strikers, so he provides a good link with Chris Wood at the top. He is a very good leader. He is capable of creating chances for people and he is very clever.

“I think he is on his way to maybe other suitors. I am very very impressed.”

He would be a great signing for Newcastle United

A move away from Forest feels likely, and Gibbs-White would certainly be a good addition to the Newcastle United squad.

He has already been hailed as a leader by Ben Foster, while his versatility will make him massively appealing to Eddie Howe. The 24-year-old is capable of playing out wide, as an attacking midfielder or even as a box-to-box number eight, which would make him a great squad player at St James’ Park.

Gibbs-White has proven himself at Forest to be a top Premier League player, boasting 25 goal contributions in the league since his arrival from Wolves. His numbers are outstanding, particularly in a team that has been competing at the wrong end of the table.

That is why Saha believes he is attracting interest from elsewhere, and why Newcastle United might have a chance to sign him very soon.
