Cambridge United go into final week of season needing one victory from two matches to guarantee Sky Bet League One status

Cambridge United’s Sky Bet League One fate has come down to the final week of the season.

Victory over Derby County at the Cledara Abbey Stadium on Saturday would have ensured that the U’s would be playing in the third tier of English football for a fourth straight campaign, but as it was the promotion-hunting Rams ran out 1-0 winners.

But it was not all bad for United, with results elsewhere largely going in their favour. The gap to fourth-from-bottom Cheltenham Town in the final relegation spot stands at five points and with just two fixtures remaining, the odds are firmly stacked in favour of Garry Monk’s men.

A home win over Wycombe Wanderers tomorrow night will get the job done – as will matching the result that Cheltenham record at home against Peterborough United. Should Cheltenham fail to win then safety is guaranteed, but a victory for the Robins – coupled with a defeat for Cambridge – would set up a nervy final match of the season away at already-relegated Port Vale on Saturday.

“We’ll continue what we’re doing,” Monk said after the weekend’s slender loss to Derby. “What’s important is the mentality. The lads are trying to show we want to try and finish on our terms.

“Yes certain results have been going our way but I don’t want to finish like that. I want to finish on our terms and we get another opportunity on Tuesday to do that.

“I’m sure you’ll see the same level of commitment and effort, we just need to find a way of being more composed in certain areas of the pitch to help us break teams down. We’ll work on that for Tuesday.”
