Long Melford’s Big Night Out fireworks event cancelled due to rising financial pressures

A popular charity fireworks night – a fixture of the Long Melford calendar for more than half a century – will not go ahead this year, unless fresh funding support can be found.

Project Seven announced over the weekend that the 2024 edition of the Big Night Out, which takes place in Long Melford every autumn, has been cancelled.

For more than 50 years, the charitable organisation has organised the fireworks event, helping to raise approximately £800,000, which has been distributed to various local causes.

However, in a statement on Sunday, Project Seven revealed that rising financial pressures meant they could not proceed with this year’s event – unless another organisation can provide funds to help cover organising costs.

The announcement also raised uncertainty over the long-term future of the Big Night Out in the years ahead.

“It is with regret that Project Seven must announce that there will not be a Big Night Out in 2024, due to financial pressures and other demands put on to us,” the statement reads.

“The only way we can continue is by obtaining sponsorship.

We will continue supporting local events with our food unit and are also actively looking for other events to expand this side of our fundraising.

“We rely on volunteers and are also seeking more willing hands to help at these events, and if you can help in any way, please get in touch with a committee member.

“Thank you everyone for your support to the Big Night Out over the years.”
