Report: Manchester City eye 'extraordinary' manager that was 'on the brink' of replacing Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool

All eyes will be on Liverpool and the man they decide to appoint as Jurgen Klopp’s replacement in the summer, with a move for Ruben Amorim expected – but Man City may have a decision to make soon.

Pep Guardiola has now been at Man City for eight years and is approaching 500 games in charge as the club’s manager. His 465 games at City eclipses the 408 games combined at Barcelona and Bayern Munich.

But his contract at The Etihad will expire at the end of the 2024-25 season. It remains unclear if Guardiola will sign a new contract at City, and it could depend on the options available to the gaffer next summer.

It is only right that City will be exploring the market to find a possible long-term successor to Guardiola, in order to transition seamlessly and remove any doubt – as there is at Liverpool now, with Klopp going.

Manchester City eye Liverpool target to replace Pep Guardiola

One manager that Liverpool were constantly linked with was Bayer Leverkusen boss, and former Anfield star, Xabi Alonso. He has just guided his side to the Bundesliga title, remaining unbeaten on all fronts.

Europa League semi-finals, DFB Pokal final, all ahead. Of course, Alonso has stated that he is going to stay at Leverkusen rather than leave – with Liverpool, Bayern Munich and even Real Madrid linked with him.

Reports even claim that Alonso was ‘on the brink’ of accepting a move to Anfield as Klopp’s replacement. Only, to then decide to stay put. But, that is not putting off Man City, who are also interested in Alonso.

Spanish newspaperAS claim that Liverpool, Bayern and Madrid’s interest remains in Alonso – even if he is to remain at Leverkusen this summer. But, Man City are also considering Alonso to replace Guardiola.

What Pep Guardiola has said about Man City target Xabi Alonso…

Alonso’s work in Germany is nothing short of sensational. But perhaps it was no surprise he would be a top-level boss – working under the likes of Jose Mourinho, Rafa Benitez, Guardiola and Carlo Ancelotti.

The world’s best, or certainly, the best when working under them. Guardiola managed the “extraordinary” Alonso at Bayern, and has praised him recently for the job he is doing as Leverkusen boss, in Germany.

“If you ask me [about] the job he is doing, honestly? Wow. He’s unbeaten, the only team in modern football that’s unbeaten in all competitions and fighting in that way with Bayern Munich,” Guardiola said.
