'First-class': Chris Wilder names the Manchester United player he thinks is just 'unbelievable'

Sheffield United take on Manchester United tomorrow and Chris Wilder has admitted his huge admiration for one of their players.

The Blades boss is once again looking for some sort of reaction from his team.

A hammering at the hands of Burnley at the weekend has all but relegated United and eyes are now firmly on next season for most supporters.

For now, Wilder has his eyes on Old Trafford for now. A win or even a good performance will at least give fans something to shout about.

Indeed, we saw how Coventry worried Man U at the weekend, and the Blades will fancy doing the same.

Of course, a trip to Old Trafford means a reunion with a certain Harry Maguire.

And when asked about the England defender, Chris Wilder was full of praise for the former United academy prospect.

Chris Wilder lauds Manchester United’s Harry Maguire

Speaking in his presser yesterday, Wilder was asked about Maguire and the stick he’s had over the years.

And from the Blades boss, there was nothing but praise.

“Outstanding. We’ve all seen his progression, and we’re delighted for him. He hasn’t had it easy. When you move to a club like Man U there are a lot of advantages but also an awful lot of pressure put on you, and he’s had to endure some tough times. As we all have, as we are now. He’s done that at club and international level but the way he handles himself is first class,” Wilder said.

“He’s a humble guy, he’s worked hard to get where he is and he’s an absolute shoo-in for an England team looking to win a major honour. And we have a boy from just down the road that’s right in the middle of it. We’ll have a shake of a hand after but before that, it’s game on. And he’ll understand that just as much as anyone else.”

Chris Wilder suggests his players can learn from Harry Maguire

Of course, we’ve seen some dismal performances from Sheffield United players this season when the going has got tough.

There’s been a distinct lack of character at times and it’s something that has shocked fans and Wilder.

And going back to Maguire, the Blades boss admitted some of his players could learn a thing or two from the Manchester United ace.

“You’re talking about Harry at world-class level. He’s been dug out so many times it’s unbelievable. But he keeps coming through it and he’s mentally strong and you have to be mentally strong. You have to be physically strong too but most important is that mentality, especially at Bramall Lane.

“You can’t go under. And if one goes under, you’re playing with 10. If two go under, you’re playing with nine. The game’s hard enough, 11 v 11. It’s even tougher when you’re playing in the Premier League and we can’t afford to carry anyone or have passengers.”
