The European Union is preparing new sanctions against companies from Turkiye, China, the United Arab Emirates, and Hong Kong for supplying goods to Russia, reports Bloomberg.
The source notes that companies based in Russia, as well as in Turkiye and the United Arab Emirates, imported European goods worth millions of euros.
Later, these goods were used by Russian military forces, despite trade restrictions imposed by the European Union. The EU is also considering the possibility of imposing sanctions on a small number of Chinese and Hong Kong companies that allegedly provided Russia with satellite images and other technologies.
"Several of the companies being assessed for potential sanctions are based outside Russia but have links to Russian and Belarussian individuals and firms, the document suggests. EU states are expected to begin discussing a new sanctions package later this week," Bloomberg writes.
Russians have circumvented sanctions by using technologies related to missile navigation systems, European-made antennas, and components used in military computer technology.
New package of sanctions against Russia
The European Union has imposed 13 packages of sanctions against Russia for its war in Ukraine. However, the Kremlin has managed to circumvent restrictions and acquire crucial equipment for its army.
Therefore, Vice-President of the European Commission Valdis Dombrovskis stated that the European Union has begun preparations for the 14th package of sanctions, which is expected to be adopted in the spring of this year.
Recently, a senior EU official announced during a briefing that the new package will include punitive measures against those who circumvent existing sanctions against Russia.
