'I went...': Current Sheffield Utd star says he actually turned down Manchester United in 2015

Not many players get the chance to play for Manchester United but one current Blades star has claimed he very nearly signed for the Red Devils as a youngster.

The Old Trafford outfit have a rich history in the game and until very recently, only the very very best were given the chance to play for them.

Of course, the last few years has seen a bit of a decline in terms of quality at Man United. But overall, they remain one of the biggest clubs in the world.

Naturally, most players would jump at the chance of signing for the Red Devils.

But not, it seems, one current member of Chris Wilder’s Sheffield United squad.

Mason Holgate reveals he nearly signed for Manchester United in 2015.

Speaking to SUTV ahead of the game with Man United tonight, Everton loanee Holgate has revealed he actually backed away from a move to Old Trafford before moving to Goodison Park.

“Yeah, I went on trial when I was 18 when I was leaving Barnsley. There were a few clubs I could have gone to and I think Barnsley had agreed with Man United that I could go for like two weeks. But I think I came back after like a week and ended up going to Everton.

“I just thought it was a clearer pathway to the first-team. This was before the likes of Marcus [Rashford] were coming through and I didn’t see a pathway and I kind of saw that more at Everton, and that’s the decision I went with,” Holgate said.

Mason Holgate has shown he’d be a decent signing

Some fans feel Holgate has been a bit of a wasted signing and after he was sent off so early into his time at the club, it’s an easy to come to opinion.

However, since then, Holgate has actually shown why he is a Premier League player and if he can be someone brought in over the summer, it wouldn’t be the worst move United could make.

With Anel Ahmedhodzic likely to move on and the likes of Chris Basham and John Egan injured and out of contract, there is a gaping hole in United’s backline.

Yes, wages could be an issue. But Holgate is a quality operator who at Championship level, would surely excel.

Clearly, as this story shows, he was a very talented youngster who has just lost his way a touch.

Chris Wilder, then, might be the man to get the best out of him once more.
