Sheffield United might have had a terrible season this year but Carl Asaba feels there’s one player who can take huge credit.
The Blades are going to Old Trafford tonight to face Manchester United as they look to put some pride back into their season.
Of course, to get any sort of result at Old Trafford, every Sheffield United player needs to be on their game and produce.
At the weekend against Burnley, too many of those players failed to deliver and ultimately, whimpered when the going got tough.
However, speaking to SUTV, former Blades striker Carl Asaba has said that there’s one man who has been brilliant overall for United.
Carl Asaba says Sheffield United midfielder deserves plenty of credit
Speaking about the Blades ahead of Manchester United, Asaba took time out to praise midfielder Gus Hamer for his efforts.
“Real quality. I’ve thought over the last few weeks his actual fitness and ability to cover the ground has excelled. He’s getting better and better and when the ball got to him [against Burnley] and he cut inside, you’re waiting for the ball to nestle because he has that ability.
“You’re just wishing a few of the big moments had fallen to Gus, cos he’s one player who has produced this season,” Asaba said.
Gus Hamer is crucial in Sheffield United rebuild
There’s going to be so much change over the summer but one man who United cannot afford to let go is Gus Hamer.
He’s taken his time to get fully going this season but he has shown what he is all about and in his first Premier League season, in a poor side, he’s shown his quality.
Four goals and five assists is nothing to be ashamed of for Hamer and having done amazingly well in the Championship with Coventry, Chris Wilder will see Hamer as a key man.
Of all the players who could be sold or moved on, you have to feel Hamer is the man to build this team around next term.
If he can stay, and continue to shine alongside Oliver Arblaster in midfield, then United are well set to at least have a good go at winning promotion.
