Jeremy Doku is outdoing every player in the Premier League in one stat

Jeremy Doku has topped a statistic out of every player in the Premier League this season.

Considering Doku is only in his debut campaign at the Etihad Stadium, it is fair to say that for him to be as high as he is when it comes to any statistic is impressive.

Currently, the £55.5 million man is the kind of player who is easy on the eye but is not known for getting goals and assists on a frequent basis; a trait that is common amongst young wingers.

However, to write off a talent like the Manchester City wide forward after his first season in England is about to draw to a close could prove to be a fatal error.

As Pep Guardiola recently claimed, before the 21-year-old’s injury, he was performing at an “unbelievable level.”

However, as has been the case with Erling Haaland this season, Jeremy Doku’s form did tail off to an extent after his return from injury.

However, in recent games, the youngster looks back to his best, both in games where he has started as well as an impact substitute.

For instance, Doku started against Aston Villa and Luton Town, games where he got two assists and one goal.

Some might not rate the former Rennes forward’s cameos against Real Madrid and Chelsea as he failed to register a goal contribution.

But that would be quite an obtuse way to watch football.

Especially when judging any up-and-coming forward.

What matters for such players is the quality of their all-round displays and from a statistical point of view, their underlying numbers.

Speaking of underlying numbers, Jeremy Doku has registered the most touches (14.2) per match in the opposition box in the Premier League out of any player this season who has played over 1000 minutes, as per WhoScored.

Behind the City starlet are Gabriel Jesus (9.4), Darwin Nunez (9.1), Diogo Jota (9), Mohamed Salah (9) and Alejandro Garnacho (9).

Green flag about Jeremy Doku

The statistic is representative of the fact that Jeremy Doku finds it relatively simple to enter the opposition box due to his mazy dribbling and incredible pace.

However, Doku struggles to convert the promising areas he gets into goals and assists due to two reasons, in our view.

Firstly, because the highly-rated winger’s shooting still needs improvement, in terms of getting it out of his feet much quicker than he currently does and his final ball.

Secondly, Doku has a tendency to dribble into a series of defenders eventually and lose the ball.

However, the fact that Jeremy Doku is even getting into the areas he is as frequently as he is cannot be denied as encouraging.

Once Doku polishes his game in the aforementioned areas, this statistic will be looked back upon as a real positive.
