Dominic Calvert-Lewin says something ‘special’ happened at Goodison Park tonight which hasn’t in occurred in ages

Everton have finally beaten Liverpool in a Merseyside derby.

And what a way to do it.

They were resilient yet cutthroat, and bucked their profligate trend to fire home when the chances presented themselves.

Whilst the Reds did push for an equaliser, it just felt like we could have played all night and they wouldn’t have found a way to break down the steadfast and well-organised Toffees.

Then, at the other end, Dominic Calvert-Lewin shone for his workmanlike yet proficient display.

He more than earned the adulation the home support gave him.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin left stunned by Goodison Park

Speaking immediately after a historic result for the Toffees, Everton’s number nine was effusive in his praise for the support he garnered.

But his performance had merited it, with the striker working tirelessly to terrorise Virgil van Dijk before eventually scoring his goal to cap off a remarkable performance.

They were gritty, solid and patient, and whilst they rode their luck, they deserved everything that came their way.

And roaring them along was Goodison Park, in fine voice under floodlights.

In fact, the atmosphere was so good that Calvert-Lewin suggested it was the best he had heard in some time.

He told Sky Sports: ‘Yeah, it (the atmosphere) was electric. I felt it at the end. It’s not been like that for a while. It’s extra special, and I think to do that on a night like this, it’s a great experience and memory for everyone, something that we will look to kick on from.’

A truly special night for Everton against Liverpool

Well, how about that?

Everton have finally beaten Liverpool in the Merseyside derby in front of a crowd, claiming their first victory at Goodison Park over their city rivals since 2010.

An arduous 14-year wait is over, and what an empathic way to do it.

With the Reds chasing the title and the Toffees seeking survival, it was the hosts who would have the last laugh as everything seemed to fall for them.

The referee was apathetic and the players were all heroic, with few putting in a shift undeserving of praise.

And not only is this a huge night for Everton, but it also marks another time when Sean Dyche has got one over on Jurgen Klopp.

What a send-off for the German in his last derby, to finally administer another defeat to dent his title ambitions. The Evertonians will have loved that.
