Report: Rohl desperate to keep £8.4k-a-week Sheffield Wednesday star, there's no extension clause

Di’Shon Bernard is one of the many out of contract at Sheffield Wednesday this summer.

Sheffield Wednesday and owner Dejphon Chansiri have received criticism for their handling of contracts.

The club could lose up to 19 players in the summer, either through expiring contracts or expiring loan deals.

Barry Bannan has rued how this has happened, and Danny Rohl has even commented on the matter, saying:

“In the future this should not happen again, because if you have 19 players without a contract, they could ask, ‘Why should I fight for this club?’”

One of the players out of contract in the summer is Bernard who joined on a one-year deal as a free agent last summer.

Former Manchester United youngster Bernard found himself as a free agent last summer, after being let go by the Red Devils.

He left without ever making a Premier League appearance for the club, having spent time out on loan with the likes of Salford City, Hull City, and Portsmouth.

But he’s since shone with Sheffield Wednesday.

Bernard has featured 30 times in the Championship this season, becoming a huge fan favourite for his commanding performances at the back.

He’s also flourished on the international stage with Jamaica, earning a 3rd place finish in the CONCACAF Nations League last month.

There were rumours earlier this season that Bernard was among the players who Rohl wanted to keep at Sheffield Wednesday.

And now, an emerging report from The Star has confirmed that Rohl does indeed want to keep Bernard at the club.

The same report also reveals that there is ‘no extension clause’ in his current contract, which is definitely set to expire this summer.

As per Salary Sport, Bernard earns a reported £8.4k-a-week at Wednesday.

A tricky decision for Di’Shon Bernard

Bernard has certainly found his footing with Sheffield Wednesday.

At 23 years old, he’s not gained a whole lot of experience, and he would’ve simply been hoping to play a lot of games this season.

And he’s done that, showing a lot of class and potential along the way too; he’s a typical Rolls Royce-type defender who can do everything on the ground and in the air, and he’s agile too.

Though it seems like a certainty that if Wednesday go down, Bernard moves on to another Championship club.

He’s shown his class in the second tier this season and deserves to be playing at this level.

But if Wednesday stay up, it also seems likely that Bernard stays, and continues working under Rohl and playing in front of fans who have really warmed to him.
