Burwell & Exning and Histon get new Oynx League Division One season started with victories

Newly-promoted Burwell & Exning (196-8) started the 2024 Oynx League Division One season with a 30-run victory at Wisbech Town (166) on Saturday.

Batting first after being inserted by the hosts, it was a captain’s knock from Paul Summerskill that helped to push his side towards a competitive total.

Number four batsman Summerskill scored 77 runs, while he was ably supported by a half century from Ben Seabrook (52).

Burwell & Exning then went on to share the wickets around during their successful defence, with Nic Huckle (2-23), Manish Burman (2-27) and Ben Kelly (2-41) all taking a couple of wickets apiece.

On Saturday (27 April) Burwell & Exning will play their first home match of the year when they take on an Old Leysians side that were forced to concede last weekend’s clash at Eaton Socon.

Elsewhere, Histon (129) came out on top by 52 runs during Saturday’s Oynx League Division One season-opening low scoring affair at Sawston & Babraham II (77).

Overseas addition Dan Cummins showed his batting credentials for Histon with a top score of 49 – one of just three batsmen to contribute double-figure tallies.

Nevertheless, with John Turner in top form, the visitors skittled out their hosts cheaply.

Turner ended his 10 overs with figures of 4-12, while there was two wickets apiece for Malik Ahmer and captain Ben Leach.

Histon will go in search of back-to-back victories on Saturday (27 April) when they play host to Ramsey at the Histon Recreation Ground.

Meanwhile, a half century from Aatish Kean Maharaj (51) could not prevent Cambridge St Giles (143) from slipping to a two-wicket defeat at Ramsey (144-8).

Neol Snehith (3-20) was the pick of the bowling attack for St Giles, who will host Saffron Walden II at the weekend.

Foxton Granta’s first Division One game of the season fell victim to the inclement weather.

The champions from two campaigns ago had been due to travel to Southill Park.

However, a wet outfield at the Bedfordshire ground forced the umpires to call the contest off without a ball being bowled.

Lewys Hill’s Foxton Granta will instead now look to kick the new term off on Saturday (27 April) when they welcome Sawston & Babraham’s second string to the Foxton Recreation Ground.
