‘Costs too much money’: Ralf Schumacher says 0-podium driver ‘has to be worried’ about his Formula 1 future

Former Formula 1 driver Ralf Schumacher hasn’t been one to keep his opinions to himself since retiring from the sport.

He’s swapped battles with Juan Pablo Montoya for punditry and is keeping a close eye on what’s going on within the paddock.

Ralf Schumacher was speaking to Sport Bild off the back of the Chinese Grand Prix.

Unsurprisingly, Max Verstappen added another victory to his impressive tally and is very much on course for a fourth world title.

Lando Norris turned heads with his performance across the weekend and while he failed to convert his Sprint Race pole into a maiden victory, his second-place finish in the Grand Prix deserves huge plaudits.

However, some performances required further analysis for the wrong reasons.

Lance Stroll’s collision with Daniel Ricciardo ended the Australian’s race and left David Croft baffled by the team’s response as he tried to avoid taking full responsibility.

Kevin Magnussen made an error that ended Yuki Tsunoda’s race and brought his first torrid weekend of the season to an end.

Ralf Schumacher pointed out that Williams driver Logan Sargeant is still looking out of his depth on the grid.

The 23-year-old only has a single point to his name in 26 race starts and once again finished last on Sunday.

Ralf Schumacher worried about Williams driver Logan Sargeant

A few eyebrows were raised at the end of last season when Williams announced Sargeant had signed a new one-year deal.

Both Felipe Drugovich and Liam Lawson were in the paddock in Abu Dhabi at the end of the campaign wondering if they would be called upon for 2024.

Instead, James Vowles put his faith in Sargeant but gambling on the American being the ‘surprise of the season’ hasn’t paid off.

Sargeant spun out and finished last in Bahrain but put on a better show in Saudi Arabia.

He then had to give up his chassis to Albon in Melbourne, highlighting his position within the team and how little faith Williams have in him to secure any vital points.

As soon as he stepped back into the car in Japan, he put it straight into the barriers during his first run in free practice, adding more crash damage to a quickly multiplying bill for his team.

Sargeant’s spin in qualifying China summed up his season and Schumacher thinks the Williams driver will be worrying about his future.

Logan Sargeant needs strong home race in Miami to ease pressure

Talking about which drivers have underperformed in 2024, Ralf Schumacher said: “Of course, it’s still early in the season, but Logan Sargeant has to be worried about his cockpit.

“He makes too many mistakes and costs too much money through his accidents. But Pierre Gasly has not been convincing so far this year either.”

Schumacher’s thoughts on Sargeant’s future at Williams have been echoed by other pundits.

Richard Bradley has said he can’t see any way of the American retaining his seat for next year.

Pedro De La Rosa has told Sargeant he needs to do more simulator days to get more comfortable with the car.

Unfortunately, at this stage of his F1 career, it might already be too late for him to save his seat.

Williams have reached a point where they might even ask for special dispensation to get Andrea Kimi Antonelli into the car before his 18 birthday.
