How Arsenal's chances in Premier League title race changed after shock Liverpool defeat

Arsenal were handed a boost in the Premier League title race as Liverpool suffered a 2-0 defeat to their main rivals Everton last night.

The Gunners are competing with Liverpool and Manchester City in a tight title race, and Mikel Arteta’s side are currently top of the table, although they have played two more games than Man City.

Man City will face Brighton, and should they win, they will be just one point behind Arsenal before the North London derby on Sunday, with Pep Guardiola’s side then travelling to Nottingham Forest after.

Liverpool would have been level with Arsenal now, albeit with an inferior goal difference, had they beaten Everton, but they fell to their first defeat at Goodison Park in 14 years, and this result has now changed the complexion of the title race.

Liverpool defeat to Everton gives Arsenal boost in Premier League title race

Opta staticians have been attempting to predict where the title will end up this season, and have been backing Manchester City in recent weeks.

Arsenal and Liverpool were said to have outside chances though, but Jurgen Klopp’s side losing dramatically reduced their chances of glory, whilst also increasing the likelihood of Arsenal winning their first league title since 2004.

Sky Sports have now highlighted Opta’s latest title percentages, with Liverpool now on the verge of exiting the race entirely, and Arsenal still some way behind City.

Man City have been given a 62.2% chance of lifting the title, an increase of 6.2% after the Liverpool game, whilst Arsenal rose from 30.8% to 35.1%.

Liverpool’s defeat saw their odds drop to just 2.7%, having gone into the game with a chance of 13.2%.

Arsenal simply cannot afford to drop any more points in the title race, with last week’s defeat to Aston Villa losing them the points advantage they had over Man City.

Arteta’s side have been near-perfect in 2024, losing once, drawing with Manchester City and winning the other 12 league games they have played in.

However, they will need to beat Spurs and Man United away, whilst also hoping City drop points, if they are to win the league, and given City’s previous experience in title run-ins, this may be wishful thinking despite the progress the Gunners have made this season.
