Tottenham’s 10 worst players over the last decade and where they are now

Tottenham Hotspur have endured a difficult few years following the sacking of Mauricio Pochettino.

But with Ange Postecoglou now at the helm, the Lilywhites finally look like a side who could return to competing for Champions League football on a consistent basis.

There have still been some bumps in the road for Tottenham this season with a few dismal results offering some shocks.

However, there is a lot more cause for optimism at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with Spurs currently sat in fifth spot.

Postecoglou has finally brought Tottenham fans with football they can get behind after some turgid years with Jose Mourinho, Nuno Espirito Santo and Antonio Conte at the helm.

Here at The Spurs News, we have taken a look at Tottenham’s 10 worst-rated players from the last 10 years, and where they are now…

Note: These players must have made 10 or more appearances in a single season, with their rating coming from WhoScored.

Harry Winks

As well as Harry Kane, Harry Winks was also known as ‘one of our own’ at Tottenham having come up through the club’s academy.

He departed the club last summer for Leicester City as Spurs looked to make a deal for James Maddison to come in the opposite direction.

The midfielder now looks set to return to the Premier League next season as the Foxes look good for automatic promotion.

But his displays in the 2016/17 campaign earned him a rating of just 6.37 in what was an impressive season for the club on the whole.

Vincent Janssen

Signed from the Eredivisie in 2016, the Dutchman arrived on the back of a seriously impressive season with AZ Alkmaar.

But he really failed to deliver up top for Tottenham when he managed to find the back of the net just twice in the league over the 2016/17 season.

Over the course of that season he was awarded with a mere 6.34 as he struggled to find his feet in England.

Janssen now finds himself playing in Belgium with Royal Antwerp after a stint in Mexico with CF Monterrey.

Tom Carroll

Another homegrown midfielder makes the list and Tom Carroll may well be best remembered for that assist for Gareth Bale’s goal away to West Ham.

Jokes aside, Carroll’s time at Spurs never really got up and running and he was sent out on various loans before he left permanently in 2017 for Swansea City.

Over the 2015/16 season, Carroll earned a rating of just 6.32 and he currently finds himself playing in League One with Exeter City.

Erik Lamela

Now to a real cult hero. Erik Lamela was a firm fan favourite by many in north London with the Argentine asserting himself as a player who would give everything for the badge.

Lamela racked up 257 appearances in north London and tallied up 37 goals and 44 assists but there remained a feeling he did not quite live up to his potential.

The 2020/21 campaign saw Lamela struggle under Jose Mourinho and he ended that season with a rating of 6.3.

After leaving Spurs in a deal with Sevilla to bring Bryan Gil to north London, the Argentine has gone on to get his hands on the Europa League trophy with the Spanish outfit.

Yves Bissouma

One player who joined the club with a lot of promise was Yves Bissouma but the Mali midfielder has really struggled to replicate the form shown during his time with Brighton & Hove Albion.

The midfielder has already been named as Tottenham’s biggest underperformer this term on the back of his early season form.

And last season was equally as disappointing and his struggles under Conte saw Bissouma earn a rating of only 6.29.

Jermain Defoe

And now to a Tottenham legend in Jermain Defoe. The striker is Tottenham’s seventh highest ever goalscorer with a stunning return of 143 goals.

However, his 2013/14 season did fail to impress as he found the back of the net just once in the Premier League before he helft for Toronto.

His legacy at Tottenham did not take a blow as a result of that season where he earned a 6.28 rating.

Ironically, the former striker has now returned to the club where he works as a coach in the U18s side and he has even spoken about one day becoming a manager.

Steven Bergwijn

From a Tottenham legend to a transfer flop, Steven Bergwijn comes in at number four in this list.

The Dutchman landed from PSV Eindhoven and scored a stunning goal against Manchester City on his debut.

But his second season in north London proved a really difficult one where he was handed a 6.25 rating as he provided a return of just four contributions in the league.

Bergwijn left Tottenham in the summer of 2022 as he returned to the Eredivisie with Ajax and Tottenham somehow turned a profit on the winger.

Roberto Soldado

Speaking of transfer flops, we come to one of the biggest flops in Tottenham’s recent history.

Arriving from Valencia having netted 24 goals in La Liga, Soldado really struggled in England with just six league goals in his first season.

The following season was even worse as Soldado was handed a 6.21 rating after only scoring once in the entire league season.

Having returned to Spain and spent some time in Turkey, Soldado hung his boots up last summer after ending his career with Levante.

Fernando Llorente

Fernando Llorente had a mixed spell in north London but provided fans with something to really cheer about in that Champions League quarter-final against Manchester City.

It is a moment which will certainly paper over the cracks elsewhere with Llorente only finding the back of the net 13 times for Spurs.

The Spaniard only scored one league goal in the 2017/18 season and that saw him handed a 6.2 rating for the campaign.

Much like Soldado, Llorente announced his retirement last year after leaving Spurs for Napoli and calling it a day with Spanish side SD Eibar.

Lucas Moura

Now this may come as a surprise to many considering Lucas Moura provided Tottenham with their greatest moment of the last decade, but the Brazilian is statistically the club’s worst performer.

That night in Amsterdam has earned the winger a spot in Tottenham’s history books for eternity after he netted a hat-trick against Ajax.

And the Brazilian was a sensational servant for the club over the years but the 2022/23 season was one to forget for him.

Moura departed the club last year but he went out with a rating of just 6.09.

After leaving north London, Moura has returned to Sao Paulo where he has lifted the Brazilian Cup with his boyhood club.
