Wisbech Town boss deems his side ‘not good enough’ after heavy Cambs Invitation Cup final loss to Cambridge City

Wisbech Town manager Alex Street deemed his side 'not good enough' after the club's disappointing midweek cup final defeat to Cambridge City.

The Fenmen's defensive frailties were all too apparent as they were well beaten by the Lilywhites in the Cambs Invitational Cup final on Tuesday night.

The Fenmen were their own worst enemies as they slumped to a 4-0 loss against their Northern Premier League Midlands opponents.

Stan Leech notched a hat-trick for the Lilywhites while ex-Wisbech striker Dylan Edge was also on target against his former club.

A frustrated Street said: "It just shows that we're not good enough, quite frankly.

"What I will say is that our effort has been excellent, they give me everything they've got, they keep trying but it just hasn't been good enough.

"I've tried to defend the players all season. We've cut a lot of people out, players have leftand we've brought Step 6 and 7 players to this football club.

"One lad has come back and scored 20-odd goals this season, Ollie Williams has been outstanding and Ethan (Wilson) is a young lad trying to push on.

"Defensively this year has been our weakest point, as a team collectively, and that's something that has got to change.

"I will have a break but it just doesn't stop, I've got to get players in and try to have a good summer.

"It's about getting the right players in around me and the club and making sure that we are successful next season.

"We've had a sub-standard season but we've saved the club money, which people don't talk about and that's helped.

"Yes it has been hard to watch at times but that is what we are dealing with.

"I'll defend these lads until I'm black and blue and it's a shame to finish on a low like we have.

"I'll have a sit down with the chairman and see what he wants to do and then plan from there."

Leech headed Cambridge City into an 18th-minute lead at the Pro-Edge Stadium on Tuesday night and that's the way it stayed until half-time.

Edge doubled the Lilywhites' leads four minutes after the restart before Leech went on to complete his treble with further goals in the 71st and 81st minutes.

"I actually thought their front two were excellent," admitted Street after the game.

"They bullied my centre-halves and their wingers went high and caused us no end of problems.

"They did the basics really well by putting the balls in the right areas and a real busy front two caused us all kinds of problems.

"I always thought the further the ball goes up the pitch the more you step up and squeeze them out but we don't and the lad is allowed a free header and heads it in from six yards out.

"We huffed and puffed and I thought we did okay for the remainder of the half. We talked about a few things at half-time and I'll be honest I don't know what has gone on.

"Their striker was able to turn in the box and taps it in for 2-0 just after half-time and that kills you.

"The third and fourth goals were just half-hearted efforts with players diving in and getting caught and a goalkeeping error, but that's the story of our season."
