Southwell Town Council call extraordinary meeting to discuss motion for swimming pool

An extraordinary council meeting has been called to discuss a motion for Southwell’s swimming pool.

Southwell Town Council will be holding an extraordinary full council meeting on Wednesday, May 1, at Southwell Minster School, Nottingham Road.

The agenda, available via the council’s Facebook page, includes “motion regarding swimming pool”, as well as announcements from the chairman, and an opportunity for questions from members of the public.

Southwell Leisure Centre’s main pool has been closed since October 2023.

A vote will be taken for part of the meeting, at the end of the agenda, to be held in closed session.

The meeting has been called in line with promises made by the council’s chairman — that an extraordinary meeting would be held as soon as the council had a motion to present, and that it would be held in a venue large enough for any members of the public who wish to attend to do so.

At the council’s Annual Town Meeting, held on Wednesday, April 14, it was further aknowleged that the swimming pool is currently one of residents’ main concerns.

The meeting will begin at 7pm, and as with all town council meetings, members of the public are invited to attend.

Recently a closed meeting has been held between Newark and Sherwood District Council — which pledged £5.5million to build a new pool — Southwell Leisure Centre trustees, and Southwell Town Council in order to progress plans to return the town’s swimming provision.

The main pool at Southwell Leisure Centre has been closed since October 2023, after a major leak was discovered.
